I was wondering how important a crook tail is to a show judge,or how many points are deducted ect... I have a great pup in my litter who has every other quality I am looking for except for his tail being slightly crook at the end. I may keep him or sale him depending on the importance of this issue. Any advice?

Oh boy, This is a tough one, I personally if the dog is as you say, Perfect in any other way would NOT cull him from a program simply because of the tail, However you have and do have to recognize that a hook tail is a fault, severity of crook may or may not influence a judge I am not sure on that, don't show myself. So long as it does not contribute to a "spinal deformity" I personally would keep this guy and see what happens. Would I breed him ?? don't know that might be tough. Good Luck, and others will I'm sure have more information/elightenment for you.

Echo, do you think it is genetic or may be caused from another pup pulling on it when he was young?I dont remember noticing it when he was born.

by EchoMeadows on 04 December 2006 - 05:12

It's one of those things that seems to develop as the dog does, This has happened with 2 of my pups. However if this is they're only fault, well... I think I can tolerate a hook tail, so long as there is nothing degeneratively wrong with the spine. It has been said and is a more common feeling that this is a Genetic issue. I'm shocked that No one else has posted regarding this. I am sure they will though, on Monday. :-)

This has been discussed at length in the recent past, and both hooked tails and dead tails are mentioned. There is of course a standard for a correct tail. If the tail hangs very slightly to one (1) side, then while it mars the appearance slightly it is generally overlooked if the dog is otherwise correct. The hooked tail is thought to definitely be genetic in nature, and I presume the severity would determine whether the dog/bitch is suitable for a breeding programme. Bob-O

And that's what I thought, Thank You Bob-0 for reassurance !! Always appreciate your thoughts, when you give them :-)

Bob-o His tail goes up at last 2 inches of the end of his tail. sometimes it is normal an other times it bends. He is a really nice boy otherwise. I just don't know if this should be a reason not to keep a dog. I plan on getting him schutzhund trained and I would like to show him. and everything else that goes with it and I am not sure how big of a fault it is.

Thanks EchoMeadows. I may add that, who knows; this puppy's tail may become correct as he grows and the tail becomes heavier. Very possibly not-one must wait and see. Bob-O

If you can actually feel a crook in the tail: not good. (genetic) If the tail just curls up a little bit, no palpable deformity, it may well straighten out with age. Many dogs will relaz their tail with gaiting and familiarity with the show ring. Shelley

just like to add... if a fixed bend (60 degrees) half way the tail although the dog wags its tail and react when somebody tugs it " he does not like it either and gets so irritated when someboby does that" I also noticed hair that is a bit too kinjky on that part of that bend... I even thought that it was fixed by the breeder But when I had her bred to a stud with a notable long tail which plays it tail, it curl and relax (really too long) All progeny had uniform curled tail // but not deformed // I did not repeat the breeding // Line breeding with URAN improved but i had a male with a GENETICALY dock tail and lookes more of SHORT coat whenn were bredding for Plush and standard coats....
