Sgt. Rex, an 11 year old German Shepherd Dog who was injured in Iraq in 2006, along with his Marine handler Cpl. Megan Leavey, when an explosive device was detonated near them, passed away Dec. 22, 2012. Leavey fought to adopt Rex when the military retired him earlier this year after he developed facial palsy, and with the help of Senator Charles Schumer and public outcry in their favor, the adoption was approved and Rex was reunited with Cpl. Leavey again.
Story
I'm so glad this old warrior got to spend his last 8 months as a beloved family member and friend, being cared for and adored by Cpl. Leavey. He earned that kind of retirement, and frankly, I wish he would have gotten to retire sooner.

Eleven does seem quite an age to still be in service.
I agree, Hexe, this was really good news. At least
he had over half a year in comfort and love.

The story brought tears to my eyes. Sorry the dog had to remain in service for so long. Ive seen other mwd's at the age of 10 still in service. You would think with Lackland producing their own dogs, retiring dogs at 9 or so would be more appropriate.
