Can everyone tell me their experiences or junk these vets tell you.
MY vet says oh you should get your dog neutered.
WHich I am have a furture show prospect.
ANd he knows that.
He litrellay tries to scare you so he can get $300 dollars for the operation.
It will get prostrate, it urine smells, they wont mout as much, wont chase females.
Some of this is true but a well trained GSD doesnt do some of this stuff.
Prostrate is BS isnt that why some kennels retire their studs and neuter them then free to a good home dog because of prostrate and so the new owner doesent breed him.
They always assume that we have an akc when it is a german standard and they know that cause they some times see your dogs passport.
They also say you need to know the judge well of your dog to do good in the showring.
You have to buy them dinners and other BS it may be true for AKC.
But whem does a SV judge know all the handlers and owners.
I agree their may be polotics.

I think all vets do this I mean they take precaustion beacuse of so many carless mixbred dogs in AMerica.
The technician was nice.
But all the vet could do was kepp on saying.
The german shepherd is a a very dominant dog.
HE can jump fences and chase and mount and impregenate a female racoon LOL
This was months ago I wish there was like a vet who knew a lot of abou tthe breed.

We're very lucky. Our GSD's vet appreciates them and understands their drive. And we have drivey working types too. The office staff all love the dogs and give hugs to all of them. The staff also appreciates the fact we are training, getting Schutzhund titles, and insuring hips are acceptable through SV or OFA prior to any breeding.
And $300 for a neuter job? That's crazy.

my vet told me that if you neuter the male that he won't pee on everything!
by GSDkid on 02 December 2006 - 02:12
animules im not sure if it is $300 sorry it might be cheaper.
What I mean is that they just want the money.
SOme of the staff is nice.

GSDkid,
Good veterinarians are out there that do like good GSD's. Look around, it may take time to find one but you will. Go talk with them without your dog. See what their attitude is, look their place over, do they understand GSD's. Flat out interview them to see if they are acceptable to you and your dog. We had to change vets to begin with too. The old one thought our 10-week old was out of control. His office staff said put a pinch collar on him right now, today. Understand this was the first day we had him and he was in for his check-up and micro-chip, had never had a collar and leash on before. We left that office never looked back.
Good luck.

They are a good vets office they are gentle and they do understand and treat him properly.
My puppy acted crazy too but they clamed him down.
What I mean is why thye always push you to neuter a dog. They tell a lot of junk even thought they are nice.

GSDKid,
I can somehow relate to this. I've went to a see another vet for my dogs current orthopedic problem, as I wanted another opinion. I've notice that inside the patient room that they had a printed out prices of the rabies shots. I was actually quite annoyed when I saw that they charge more for the unfixed dogs. I found it very unnecessarily to charge more and to show such discrimination towards unfixed animals.
I don't exactly believe that every male dogs who aren't fixed is going to get Prostrate cancer. you can't make that assumption. IMO to avoid this corrupted gene pool is to breed males between 6 to 11 years old because by then you will fully see the entire medical history of the male and if he ever bloated, had any cancer, etc.
to be open minded about this subject... I think vets are trying to help to get unwanted pets off of the streets. Theirs too many irresponsible dog owners with unfixed animals that lets them breed to anything that stops by.
