I'm just curious as to why breeders in Germany don't test their dogs for DM and breeders in the US do? Someone please educate me on this matter.

Why don't you ask Germany why they don't test. I think that would get an easier answer.

Thanks. I've tried asking a breeder I had purchased from but he never replied.

It's simple. Germans are smarter than us.  We know the current test in the USA does not work for the German Shepherd breed. Yet breeders are rushing out an having it done, worse yet people are making breeding choices based on this extremely flawed test.  The current test is known to be less than 50 % accurate ( as a matter of fact I believe I read it has an 11% accuracy)  SO why are people even bothering with the current test.  It makes absolutely no sense at all to me.  If you actually read the scientific data on this testing you would not have it done.  What would be the point.  May as well just flip a coin. If someone said to me my dogs are DM free it would mean less than nothing.  When a test is developed that actually works, then I could see using it.  I will continue to purchase from breeders with known longevity in the lines rather than breeders who have their dogs tested.

People are using these tests as a marketing tool to charge more for their Dogs. Until they have a better test i can't use it. I will hold any judgement if people want to give the DM test more value than i think we should. Dogs can and will get sick.I will Love them as long as i have them.

brynjulf......Thumbs Up
recent thread on czech dog with dysplasia would indicate that our system in checking
hips is also flawed or at least incomplete.

*****the only thing we can safely acertain, at this point, is that a particular dog
is free from d.m. or dysplasia.  we cannot guarantee offspring.

Would someone post a link showing studies where tests were found inaccurate? I would love to read this info. Very interesting.
brynjulf, where did you see your statistics you stated?

plain & simple.......until 100% of the dogs are tested, there is no way they can come up with accurate figures.
if the vast majority of the tests submitted are "good" ones & the bad ones are not submitted, then the
percentages are skewed.

Ziegenfarm, just for me to make sure I understood you perfectly,

If we see in an ad "parents are DM free", we shouldn't rely on that as 100% correct and make our decision based on the statement? Thanks

Ibrahim
