Becareful of dogs and puppies being advertised for sale from the southern part of the US.   I being from the south know all too well how easy it is to prevent a dog from getting Heatworms and have never sold or owned a dog with heatworms. However,  I recently got one.   From personal experience I know for a fact one particular kennel that has recently placed several dogs that had heartworms at the time of transfer.

I am not trying to cause any problems or drama, but if anyone is considering purchasing anything from the south and would like more information, PLEASE private message me, and I will gladly help with information I can share.  I do not want this thread to turn into an open  "free for all", but at the same time I don't want anyone to fall victim either.  Regular Smile

Forgot to mention, that with all 3 dogs testing positive for heartworms from that particular kennel, it was said the dogs were just returned to them. With the dog we got from them, I asked for the person who returned the dog but an excuse was given and I was never able to get a contact name or number for the former owner BEFORE he was returned.  That seems to be the typcial line used.  Angry

If you are buying dogs in the south and florida especially, realise that we never get a break from mosquitos down here. Not even in "our Winter"
We have to fight HW all year, don't miss a pill or a ProHeart shot. And heartworms seem to be on the rise with the economy doing poorly and people are seeming reluctant to spend more than they have to on the dog. I'm seeing more and more people skipping vaccine and Hw meds just to keep the dog on cheaper food.
Shop carefully.

some people have also been of the assumption that if the dog is inside they don't have to keep the dog on preventative.  Which of course isn't true.

The mosquitos are really horrible. HOWEVER, heartworm prevention its just like all other preventatives. It an obligation we take on as owners or breeders.  If you can't or won't do the right thing to prevent it, than don't own dogs.  Prevention is so much cheaper than having to treat a dog for it.  But than, if a dog gets infected with heartworms and they give the dogs away because they don't want to treat them, thats pretty cheap. Can't beat that I guess.  Angry   After the dog is treated and completely heartworm free, they demand you give the dog back.  If not, they go Pyshco on you and are constantly harrassing you.  Than they bash you because you don't give out personal information or allow some people to come to your house or kennel.  Confused Smile

The simple answer is to get ownership signed over at the time the dog is given away. Get a signed piece of paper. It doesn't have to be a formal contract. A bill of sale for $1 will do.

Blackthorn GSD, we got one better than a signed piece of paper. She gave us the signed registration paper to the dog. But for some reason she still thinks she is in her right to stake claim to the ownership of the dog. She has gone to the extent of using pictures of him in an ad she placed to bash breeders.  That was her attempt to make people think we had place the ad since it is a picture of OUR dog. Little does she realize that it was traced back to her.  She is the perfect reason as her ad states, "people don't allow visitors to their homes and kennel."  She is the perfect example of someone that can not be trusted. Its almost time for us to take serious legal action to put an end to all of her ingnorance.

Yeah like a skeeter has never ever flown in the houes! It's 35 degrees here and there one buzzing us in my living room while we watch tv. They are relentless and find safe places to hide (Like next to a heatworm infested dog in it's dog houes.) And next thing you know they are gnawing on you!
Hutchins,  good luck getting rid of that crazy lady! No shortage od crazy around these days.
