Hello all, A good friend of mine has a 1 year old male shepherd. He is a smart dog from what I have seen but he is always chasing his tail. He has even made his tail bleed from biting at it. It was cute when it was a pup but it is getting pretty anoying.Any sugestions? Thanks Dave

yea when the dog starts that put it in a large indoor wire kennel with a cow hoof and get his attention of the bad habit takes time but can be done never let a dog start a cute bad habit its hard to break I had a 1 year old and they never told me about it till it became annoying and a bad habit I wish it had been nipped in the bud. Boredom is the dogs problem the prey drive is to chase anything that moves and it needs something to do everyday and some shut down time with a hoof and then do some strict work with the dog 10 mins a day then twice a day same time and get dog interested in tug and chasing a ball or anything that moves the minute u see it look at the tail kennel do no scold useless

Hello everyone, tail chasing is often a displacement issue. Someone suggested more activity. I agree completely with the increase in activity. This does not mean putting them outside in a kennel run. When board they will chase in the kennel as well. There are but so many hours in the day, so when she is still full of engery after training, I'll put her on a line. I have a large yard with a 40 foot line attached to a hook in the ground. When I see my dog getting antsy I hook her to the line and she is free to roam. If you use the line make sure your dog can not get tangled in the line or hang themselves from a deck or fence. You would be amazed at the things they can get tangled in. The line has a nice calming affect on all of my dogs. Kyle
