I like the jute gets the dog used to the same material as the sleeve.

when they get to that point we replace. I expect training tools to wear out. If they don't wear out then they probably aren't being used enough.

I like jute also, and french linen, only benefits i see is that fire hose is slicker, so the dogs must have a nice grip to hold on to also i think it will out last other tug materials just my opion, i still like different types of tugs for the dogs to get use to holding.

By far the best overall material IMO is leather (split suede).
The dog will enjoy biting the leather for obvious reasons and will build an amazing grip due to the sueade getting slick as the tug gets used.
Jute and french linen are nice only because it gives the young dog a different texture to bite, however it also tends to act like velcro since the dog can get a better grip right off the bat.
Using all of these materials will be very beneficial to your dogs.....also, hard rubber will dull your dogs teeth.

I've had great success making tugs out of used fire hose. We can get it in large length from the fire department
when they test equipment.

Thank you zuk, just trying to see what people use, I would like to start making them
Melissa I have seen used fire hose off of the trucks and it seems I can't pieces that are big enough to make it almost 3" wide it seems smaller. The material is expensive to buy, but its worth a shot. If you can make out of good material that last and it put together right and the price is right I think there could be.a market for them, but if I don't try I will never know,
thanks guys for your input

Just a comment, if one has to get a dog 'used to' a material to bite,
well, ya got ya some problems that you are not even aware of yet
Not saying anyone here has that, just commenting on another comment.
We generally have problems with our puppies biting everything and
anything, material never an issue
hell, flesh can be a favorite
