Anyone have any advice about doing schutzhubd work with a border collie? i have had several czech and ddr gsd's and this puppy has ten times the drive and grip they had. i guess i just had bad luck with shepherds as they were either shy or timid with very weak nerves or lacked the drive to do the work. I'm so excited about this puppy i bred! He is all show lines but his parents are working machines (not in schutzhund). This five month old boy is crazy for his tug. is on a jute tug now with a very full hard grip. i hope to atleast get his sch 1. Is it possible with a border collie?

I saw a jack russel who had a sch 1 so why couldn't a border collie.

What about the tracking portion?  I saw my first trial this weekend.  The tracking part is very intense and requires a dogs full concentration.  From what was explained to me, the dog is not suppose to lift its nose at all.

Fawn  - ya think 'black & white things' might not be able to track ?
Tell that to all the Border Collies with TDex after their names in the UK ...

Yes I think a Border Collie can get a SchH1.  I sincerely doubt they work from the same frame of mind as a GSD (or I should say, as a GSD is supposed to) but the pieces of the routine can be taught and a BC could definitely be passable.

I think he would do really well at tracking.  He never gives up when he can't find his ball or tug and keeps his nose on the ground.  He's not a black and thing though lol He is a blue merle like my dog in my pic.  Would I train him the same way you would a gsd?  I'm aware it would probably be in all prey with no defense.  I don't know too much about schutzhund just the very basics.

Lol.... Yeah, black and white is just not the right color.    Just kidding.

It has been a very long time since I was around a Border Collie and I just didn't remember ever seeing their nose to the ground.  Then again, my only exposer to them is on cattle ranches where looking up was a better thing.

(BTW, OP, your avaitar dog is beautiful.  I have all ways loved the coloring on the aussis)

Take this from a newbi who got some real eye openers this weekend at my first trial.

Go to a trial, club is good.  That way you can get up close and personal with each part.

I have a Border Collie that was a farm dog doing tracking in our tracking group, and she is coming along very well. Any dog can be trained to do things, Even Afghans! Believe it or not we had a snowbird that would bring her afghan to out tothe  club in the winter for Ob and he was an advanced dog. With several high in trials and many titles. Never thought i'd see the day.....
They do have the mind set for the obedience, can learn the bite work routine and they may not have the "Bang" or a shepherd or a rotty, But the Shepherd was a sheep dog long before they started biting people on command. Some recently posted a French Bulldog with an IPO 1, so i really do guess any dog could do the work.
Best of luck.
