Ok...I live in a rural area where everything is already closed. My dog was just sprayed by a skunk. Any 'home remedies' anyone can share? Stuff I may have on hand already? PLEASE!?!

I always heard a tomato juice bath helps, but think that you need to adjust to a smelly dog for quite some time.

Trailrider

This stuff works pretty good. If you can determine the area it got sprayed, usually the face, neck... they seem to be going in for a bite (I get skunks here every summer, my dogs have killed 2) Anyway... 1 bottle peroxide (16 oz.) 1/4 c. baking soda, 1 tsp. dish soap (like Dawn liquid, something with degreaser) mix until baking soda disolves. Then rub it in on the spot(s) , let it dry. It helps pretty much but not totally and when the dog gets wet the smell comes back for a while...

Trailrider-Does the peroxide bleach thier coat? Just curious.

Bathe well, Then cut 4 or 5 lemons in 1/2, Towell dry some but leave coat damp, squeeze while rubbing with the coat the lemon to espress small amount of juice, don't want it squirting everywhere just covering the hair as you rub it. Let sit for about 4 minutes, Wash again with mild shampoo Ivory works best, Condition VERY WELL let the conditioner sit for 3 to 4 minutes work it into the coat !!!! Rinse, Very well with warm water, then momentarily with cooler. Towell dry and wahlah you should be in much better shape if not fixed up all together. Good luck

GSDfan No it has never affected the color of their coat at all. I also use this in the house on the carpet when my dogs have, I guess you could say accident. I have an old dog... It takes out smells and stains. I would advise a patch test first in a inconspicuous (sp) spot, but it hasn't even bleached my carpet.

I've used that also Trailrider. Actually got that reciepe from Colorado Division of Wild Life. Works lots better than tomato juice. Mike

Wash the dog in vinegar.

Massengill vinegar douche works great too, so does mouthwash.
