Hello again, Just wondering if you had found a dog or found some further assistance finding the "right" dog for you ? I have another idea, I'm going to email someone who also has foreign connections better than I and see if he will jump in and help too. Hope this works. Keep us all posted cowboysgirl !! :-)

Oooh - I've got to find that original post with her email addy. A friend of mine is about to bring home two GSDs, one for her and one for her husband. She needs a service dog as her health is declining, and they recently lost his seeing eye dog, a shelter dog that they trained themselves. The breeder is has been working with them I think for a couple of months now on getting the training started and all that. But that breeder might be a really good contact? Let me see if I can get some info...

I too have excellent connections in Germany, having been importing dogs for myself and clients, once on a large scale, currently returning to dogs as my profession [read: position/department/job at newspaper downsized:( dog biz plans moved forward LOL] for years. I have brought over some very nice dogs over the years for all types of uses, including quite a few working K9's trained by German politzei handlers... VERY REASONABLY PRICED. Please e-mail me privately with dog search requests. Shelley Strohl vom Frauengarten GSD's

Echo, we probably scared the poor woman off with the last thread. I too would like to know if she still needs help.

Hey, you guys didn't scare me off! I was traveling home from visiting family for T-day, not able to really do much on here the last day or two. I am home now (phew) and still searching. Per my trainer, I have to find dog candidates only in New England, which I know narrows the search. but if anybody near NE thinks they could help, please let me know!

Good luck with your search. It sounds like you have some sincere people wanting to help you find your dog.

I am a little off topic but not really. ARE our GSDs the best suited breed for this service work ? If so, what kennels are doing things right? If not, why not and what breeds are better suited ? I am a beliver in Eichenluft after seeking one of her pups

I have several of my dogs working as handicapped service dogs, one as an assistant/service dog to an autistic boy. I believe GSDs can do the work, they have to be on the larger-size scale if the person is wheel-chair bound or needs the dog for balance/stability. The dog must have absolute stable nerve and calm temperament, but enough drive necessary to teach the skills needed. I think many breeds can excel at this, it can be a matter of personal preference. I know if I were in need of a service animal the GSD would be my first choice. The trainers for the autistic service dog only train Labradors, but the boy's father wanted a GSD as that was the breed of his choice. The GSD is working great according to the trainer who recommended the lab. Would be interested to know which dog of mine you saw for yourself. Thanks for your comment. eichenluft@aol.com molly http://workinggermanshepherd.com
