Hey,

To help working with pedigrees I added this to the pedigree page of the dog.   If the parents are unknown (i.e. "No information about dam" or "No information about sire") there is a new button to click next to the name.   Allows you to add a parent either from a selection (select a name that already exists) or create a new one (type in a name that does'nt exist).

It also remembers the generations selected for easy editing (i.e. if you click 5 generation pedigree and start editing, it remembers that you are in a 5 gen view)..

This is just for unknown parents.  Registered parents are uneditable in that mode. (need to go through the normal "modify pedigree" channel)..

Hope this helps those that are editing and working with pedigrees.

Wow !  Nice one, Oli.  Thanks very much, I think that may be a
significant help.  Cheers. LS

I urge those of you who find it difficult/bothersome/confusing to use the old method of registering top down (older to younger) rather then bottom up (young to old) to use this method.

It's quite fast, since you never leave the page,  You can even set the Pedigree Generations to 5 and slowly finish the pedigree, while all the time on the pedigree page itself.

I.e.. now you have a new button next to a dog that has no parents:

When you click on that, it will change into an input box with search (if the dog does not exist, the system will create it).

i.e. Green button to confirm and connect/create,  Red with minus to cancel.

This will allow you to leisurely finish a pedigree, since each update is done in real-time and immediately visible to others.

Oli, does it add the name just to that specific pedigree or does it create a record for that dog? I am about to go in and add a stack of pedigrees and know that most of them are not in the database as I go farther back in time. I know there will be a few that will have a few ancestors in common once I get going.

Let me just say thanks for the hard work! I entered a dozen or so dogs in last night and had no issues with it finding newly entered dogs. Or with it allowing me to go back and fix mistakes I'd made.

I am currently trying to revitalize a breed(along with a few other dedicated fanciers here in the states) that is on the vulnerable list in it's native country and am finding that PDB is invaluable in helping to decide on my purchasing and importing decisions.

Hey Anette,

Thank you,  I try to create an environment that helps rather then obstructs.

When you create a dog like that it is really created and can be used anywhere on any pedigree (as long as it's within the same breed).

It is simply making these steps easier (what you had to do before) -> 1) Register a dog -> 2) register a parent 3) modify dog 1 and enter parent.

The data structure is per dog, not per pedigree.  i.e. in its simplest form:   dog + gender + father + mother..    That's all you need for a system that can create hierarchical structure.

Oli!
I just entered an entire pedigree, 5 generations on the "register a Pedigree" portion. OMG, that was SOOOO easy. Then I had no trouble going back and filling in some other dogs who had no sire/dam previously but were now in the database from just that one pedigree. What a blast. Hate to tell you but I'm going to be overloading the database this weekend! As I am entering Lancashire Heelers, I'm pretty sure no one else will notice right away but I am so excited!

Great to hear.

:)

The system can handle quite a lot so don't worry.
