the best beding to me is"NOTHING"....chips and sawdust are way too messy, dogs can eat carpet/mats,ect., and that can cause all types of medical problems.man-made materials washed in detergents can accelerate allergies...if you have a dog that requires a cushioned sleeping area, maybe you could try "cow matting"(farm supply store) cut it down to exact size to make it difficult for a dog to lift a corner and promote chewing...put the dog up when he's too tired to chew or treat the edges with "bitter apple"...my personal favorite crate mat is a "MUD FLAP", that a friend discarded from his "18 wheeler",with very little trimming it fits perfectly in my #500 crate and it adds very little extra weight,as opposed to a piece of "cow mat" that weighs a little more....given the choice,my dogs prefer dirt, grass, cool cement surfaces...bed sheet...bad idea! hope this helps

Seriously, I don't use it. I put styrofoam covered by a rubber mating between the crate and bead of the truck along with am insulted crate cover, in the winter to help keep the crate warmer.
I do know that the carpet that ravels can cause some bad things to happen if eaten.

Nah, crate bedding was fine...I just couldn't get the picture out of my head. Guess I'm felling silly today.

Now if you want a dog BED, the best thing I ever did was buy a crib mattress, a discontinued model, on clearance. It cost $20, plus I bought a few cribs sheets to match my living room. The sheets are super easy to wash and the vinyl mattress can just be wiped down. Considering the price for a poorly made dog pillow at my local pet store, this was a steal and my dogs LOVED it, and it was big enough that two of them curled up on it together, and lasted much longer than the average dog would, as it never went flat.

If shipping a puppy cargo, a huge absorbant pad is good.

I keep a toy in there for her to chew if she wants to, but for the most part she's not interested in it until after she gets out, then she wants to play.
