To those of you that give your dogs marrow bones how often do you give them a new one?  After my GSD gets it hollowed out she does not chew on it any more. Will it hurt her to give her one a day or one every couple days?  Her diet is purina pro plan and then every other day I add in either a couple raw eggs or chicken breast.

Some dogs get the runs from the rich marrow, so really you need to decide if your dog can handle it. I just bought a package the other day and have had no problem giving them each a bone to keep them busy, days in a row. I usually have to take a chopstick and push out the middle stuff they never can reach. After that the big dog takes the hollow bones and buries them in the yard somewheres. He's funny about that. Months go by and then suddenly, there it is, all nasty looking, but he sure is proud.

What if you filled the marrow bones, after they are "empty" with some raw goodies and then frozen? I've done
this with kongs before (usually stuffed with healthy leftovers like greanbeans, meat bits, mashed potatos etc...)
Mine all chew on the marrow bones until they split them, which is usually around a week for one. LOL

The bones are rough on the dogs teeth.  Once the marrow is out I throw away the bone.  I don't leave the bones with my dogs for more than a couple of hours.

Slamdunc. Yeah mine eats the marrow and then leaves it alone so I just pitch it and give her a new one. I may try referring with something like baby food but my question is will this affect the bone density like cooking will?  So far she has not had any bowel issues I have noticed

After watching a dog in the vet's rack up a HUGE bill while the vet waited for a large chunk of bone to clear its digestive system with the help of lots of laxitives, etc., I decided bones weren't really necessary for my dog's health. This was over $1,000, back in the 1970s!

Marrow bones are probably the safest, but even they are a hazard to heavy chewers, and the dogs should be watched carefully. Bones should be taken away before they dry out enough to split easily.

Oh yeah...then there's my e-friend's corgi, who cost her over $3,000 in dental work from splitting and breaking teeth while chewing on bones! What Smile

And every vet has removed bone splinters that were wedged in a dog's mouth or throat...
