well unfortunately she doesn't belong to you anymore so there isn't much to be done on your end..Very sad, you should have spayed her prior to placing her with someone, or thoroughly checked out the new owner:(

by Ibrahim on 22 October 2012 - 22:10

Did you make her sign a contract with a condition not to breed the dog till she is mature, health tested etc etc?
Emotionally she's your baby, legally it is the new owner's "property",

Not to be rude or unsympathetic, because I am sympathetic to your feelings, but while it's upsetting, it's not that surprising. This person obviously didn't take that commitment to the dog very seriously, and many would say you didn't either, since you gave her away at only 10mos. old due to landlord issues. Someone serious and committed to the dog sticks with it and doesn't give them up without a fight. She told you what you wanted to hear so she could get the dog. These are the kinds of sad things that happen to dogs who are purchased/adopted with little foresight and commitment. Very sad, but had you chose differently, she wouldn't be in this predicament. May this sad occurrence be a warning/lesson to you for future dogs you acquire. I'm very sorry you're going through this agony/guilt/etc.

The only way you can insure that the dog will not be bred is to have her spayed before you sell her.

This is pathetic on so many levels.......totally irresponsible.

People are going to be dishonest. However, if you rehome a dog you need to emotionally let go of it or it will eat you up. It's hard to do. I still feel very badly about a dog I had to place almost 10 years ago.

Perhaps you should have had her sign a spay contract. If I place a dog for less than its worth, and they breed the dog, they have violated the contract and will owe the full sale price. Then I would take them to small claims court to collect the difference.
