Have any of you bought meat from outside the US to feed your dogs raw?  If you cannot drink the water do you feel it is safe to buy meat that was raised in another country to feed your dogs?  LIke ethnic markets, etc.  Just curious, seems that is all we have around here.   And grass fed meat you can almost forget it around here (SO. Calif.).

Nans,

I have a nice supply of American raised (mostly hormone full and have to sort through a lot of times to find hormone free) meats.
However I know that people in Czech get their meat from South America??? this meat is not for human consumption menaing, outdated-in freezers for too long, or freezer burned. Dogs seem to be just fine...

Also my organ meats are from local "happy" cows. I get it from a guy who butchers them and not sure if that would be considered "approved" for people as sometimes the insides hit the ground! I picked them up, take them home, wash them off and feed them. the dogs are happy!

I never needed to visit the ethnic markets as I get the same supply as they do from the same distribution place.

GSDPACK;  so how did you find the distributor?  I have look so I could skip the grocery store middle man but to no avail.  Maybe looking in the wrong place.  Will look again though and thx for your comments;  I presume you freeze before feeding?

Am just feeling hinky about getting supplies from markets; and I don't think I have to say where living here in So. CA.  Great days,  Nan

I'm in New Mexico and get my raw green tripe from a lady who goes to a processing plant in Santa Rosa, for example.  She picks m up whole (gross) grinds m (now we're talking)
and then she sells it for $1.85 per lb to me and other raw feeders.  I also buy at a Mexican super market where the liver and organ meats are pretty low cost compared to the regular grocery stores.

Try to find a CO-OP on Facebook in your area.  I did a search for southern california raw feeders and it pulled up a lot of stuff to look into
https://www.google.com/#hl=en&biw=1280&bih=829&sclient=psy-ab&q=southern+california+raw+feeders&oq=raw+feeders+southern+cal&gs_l=hp.1.0.0i8i30.1287.7526.0.9851.24.22.0.2.2.1.892.4395.0j19j1j5-1j1.22.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1.wBteigerrWE&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=df5572c51b7067a4&bpcl=35466521

Lastly you could put an ad on craigslist in your area and ask for RAW FOOD LEFT OVERS FOR YOUR DOGS with the title and see if some hunters or people whom buy a whole cow will give you the rest they don't need.

Excellent advise!

Cash and Carry is another good source but I am not sure if you have them in your area. Also, check with WalMart and see where they get their meats! Winco is another big store that needs to get their supplies someplace. I also contacted the local meat stores and asked them about chicken backs. Some were nice and told me to check with their supplier.
I am sure there is a wholesale someplace where the local restaurants go, that is another place to ask.
It took me nearly a year to get all my supply in order but now I am set!
I am sure you will find really good sources in your area.

I'm not in the US, but no, I wouldn't feel comfortable with it.  Though I am very cautious and won't buy treats that are made in certain countries either.

ALOT of Walmart meat comes from outside the country (Mx) and I WONT FEED IT. Ive had dogs get sick on it more than once so I wont eat it either. I was going to actually post about the meat from Walmart but forgot about it. Be very careful about trying to cheap out buying meat from MX. Although our processing plants are nothing to cheer about, they are still better than some Ive read about in Mexico. I'm very leary about meat from there. When you have to pay a vet bill over bad meat, the cheap price you may have paid wont be worth it.

Remember it's deer season. Some hunters only want the trophy. Ask around and see if the meat will be for sale.

There are lots of butcher shops in SoCal, so I would check in with them to see if they can recommend suppliers or sell some of their scraps or bone dust (the shavings after they cut the meat.)
