Pirates Lair

My apologies if this has already been posted.

Kim

The Marine Corps has about 50 - single purpose, explosive detection dogs
that are up for adoption. This number will increase as we look to
discontinue the IDD program.  Please make contact with your civilian peers
or other LE entities and see if they would like one (or more). Please
contact Mr. Rich Landgrebe (CC'd and info below) and he will see through the
successful adoption.

The process is relatively easy; once a department states that they want a
dog, the only thing that will take any time is to have the Ft Bragg vet do a
final exam and copy the medical records for the dept.  This normally takes
1-2 days. There is no cost to adopt an IDD or transfer to a Law Enforcement
Agency except for the transportation from where the IDD is kenneled to the
adopter's location.

OGBS

Hey Kim,
How's it going? I hope all is well.

Someone is also putting out info that is a scam about this on Facebook.
Please make sure that you contact Lackland AFB only if you are interested in a retired Military Working Dog.
There are dogs available at other locations around the country, but, Lackland is the only place that handles the adoptions of decomissioned dogs.
This link provides excellent info on how to adopt a retired MWD: http://www.militaryworkingdogadoptions.com/

Um ... can't find a thing on these links which shows expectations of / questions to
the prospective adopters, trying to ensure the homes offered are going to look
after the dogs correctly.  There is some advice about feeding, 'boundaries', etc,
as well as how to persue obtaining a retired dog;  but no copy of the application
form, for instance, or hint as to what is asked on it.  How do they determine if the
home being offered is going to be suitable ?

No, not a scam, has been verified by several U.S. Law Enforcement Agencies. Was passed on to me and I'm just passing it on as requested.

The contact information listed above is for Lackland AFB as well.

I think OGBS might have meant that someone else is scamming people using this as a backdrop so people should be careful to go directly to the source but yes, this is a real program available to PD's.  I think I heard all of these dogs are labs.

All is well Steve, thanks for asking. Hope you and your pups are all good as well.

The dogs are primarily labs, returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Single purpose detection dogs.
Hopefully they will find nice legitimate homes.

Kim
