Hi
Can we supplement a 5 month old pup without any issues with Glucosamine, Chondritin Sulfate, and MSM? Is there any harm?

Yes it's OK. You can start off with one capsule a day and gradually work up to 3 when he is about 12 months old. Your vet can advise you how many to give safely.

Many people in the UK give their dogs a supplement called Yumove which contains Glucosamine/Chondroitin and Green Lipped Mussel Extract plus Vitamins http://www.lintbells.com/products/yumove and http://www.lintbells.com/products/yumove/how-it-works

It is possible to give young dogs this as well, but I am not sure that you'd be able to get Yumove in India but there are many outlets online that sell it and far cheaper than Lintbells themselves.

I can highly recommend Yumove and give it to both my dogs plus high strength Fish Oil Capsules [recommended by an ortho surgeon, as FOC have been tested and proven] My GSD has really severe HD & an arthritic elbow and still maintains mobility and she is approaching 10 years old even though ortho surgeon and my vet both said she'd be lucky to reach 7 years of age. My other dog is a 2 year old Border Collie who had OCD [both shoulders] and was operated on when he was 12 months old.

Yes it's ok as the poster above said consult with your animals care provider to determine needs.

I read that the mg dosage that is good for a large bread needs to be around 1000mg a day. Also I would have to go back to my notes but there are different ways that Glucosamine can be presented. Don't quote me on this but there are two ways that Glucosamine is mixed and provided as a suppliment. One is HCL and the other is Sulfate. If you look at the name brand suppliments they are more expensive and almost always HCL. The store brands are almost always Sulfate. IIRC, HCL (hydrogen chloride) is rumored to be easier for humans to process in regards to it being a little more natural but that does not mean it outperforms it. I think its just easier on the digestive system in long run.

Another few notes..

Glucosamine does not repair anything. Giving it to a younger animal that does not already have a issue I don't think will make any difference long term starting it this early. They are producing enough naturally. However, at a later age I've seen it make a huge difference in larger older dogs.

Some of your higher quality feeds already contain Glucosamine.

Glucosamine also does not help quickly. It takes several weeks of treatment to increase levels.

Do you suspect joint issues?

The only supplement with any evidence based scientifically researched evidence for improving canine osteoarthritis is Omega 3 fatty acids.

Hi Abby
There are no joint issues. I have 2 boxes of those tablets. He keeps playing a lot the whole day. Thats the reason I have started.

@jcmeyer

We are both in agreement with that, the Fish Oil Caps I mentioned in my previous are Omega 3. Other than giving painkillers and/or NSAIDs, the ortho surgeon said the only supplement needed for joints is Omega 3.

I guess salmon oil is rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6. How much salmon oil to give for a 5 month old GSD puppy with a weight of 23 kilos? Which is the best salmon oil product available in the market? Here in India we get Beaphar..

I was told 1 teaspoon per day mixed into the food for a 5-6 month old pup. Someone needs to confirm this though, also was told 1000mg a day for an adult dog. This site might help... http://www.dogaware.com/diet/supplements.html#fishoil

I actually feed Fish Oil Capsules and both my dogs are adults. I believe Salmon Oil is also available in capsule form and have seen some people say the dosage is 2 x 500mg capsules a day.

My GSD gets 3 capsules a day and Border Collie 2 capsules of Fish Oil, each capsule is 330mg so the figure of 1000mg a day is about right.
