I think the two dog houses below are well designed and probably excellent quality although I have not actually seen them. If you can get one of them or one like them, I think it would work well for you based on their design. If you are in an area that gets very cold, I suggest keeping the house small. I probably have the most northern GSD kennel in the world and I can tell you small is the key to keeping dogs warm. Door flaps and lots of straw. With the two houses below, a GSD could be kept comfortable anywhere. Good luck, Robin http://www.bordersprings.com/houses.shtml http://www.deer-creek.org/page7

I like the type of design that almost a "breezeway" before the bedding area that gives a little more separation from the outside and the wind. I would use an insulated box off the ground, hinged lid, and the area inside should be only big enough for the dog to sit, turn around, lie down. The smaller the area the easier for the dog to heat with their body heat. Not too small though or the dog won't go in or be comfortable. I prefer bedding like old blankets over straw, just my preference. Door flaps help a lot also. The Deer Creek model listed above is like this I think...

When I kenneled dogs outside, we had two room dog houses. They were split in the middle with a door in the wall just big enough for the dogs to get through. This gave the dogs options of getting in the side with no opening to the outside when really cold, and in the open side the other times. All sides were double with insulation between, and set up off the ground slightly. We hinged the top so that we could clean the sawdust out easily. CH

We find the best way is a comfortable bed by the radiator, remebering to turn them off after the dogs have finished watching T.V. for the night.
