Just a quick question. what kind of bedding do most use for their kennels. Stray, hay, cedar chips or some other commercial bedding thanks

I use straw in the dog houses. From what I have seen in Alaska, most use this. I believe it would be warmer than just about anything and that is what is a must here. JMO, Robin

I don't have outside dogs, but keep several houses out there for when they are out during the day. I use sawdust packaged for horse stalls.I know that there are no walnut shavings in them. I've helped work on dogs that have had pieces of straw or awns from hay work their way into their skin/ears. I find sawdust easier to deal with, store and keeps them really warm and dry. It's not very expensive, stores in a large trash can with a lid and is easy for an old lady like me to handle.LOL. CH

We use either clean straw or fresh, soft grass hay. The main thing is no stickers, no mold, no dust. It seems to stay fluffed up better for us then shavings.

I would probably use straw for warmth but I am in California, so it doesn't even freez here but maybe 4 nights a year. I use Ceder shavings, easy to buy, haul, cleanup and it makes the dogs smell good and keeps the fleas away. I have 3 kennels with gravel floors and shavings in the dog houses. 1 large dog run and 2 dog houses full of shavings, at all times. My pet dogs have the shavings in their run because they are super clean and do not potty in there. I thought gravel would work better, so I tried it in my other kennels but the rocks stick in the feces and will eventually have to be re-stocked. The chips you always have to replace but the cleanup is easier to me. I scoop a little away with the shovel but it's no biggie. I get a bit ticked when I see my rocks hitting the dumpster. Hauling that and wheeling it into the back wasn't fun. Also when the dogs dig it's easy to kick some shavings in the hole rather than shovel rock back in place and rake it level.
