I posted this a long time ago and the comments seem to have dissapeared, so I guess i wil try again. Curious about the percentage of male black and tan dogs that have silver tipping, ticking on there backs(long line formation) or necks..I have seen this primarily in(black and tan) females and or male/female sables. Every so often I have seen it in black and tan males. I like it others don't so much...I have also heard that some of the coloring is attributed to estrogen. Just curious....

I don't understand "silver tipping" Do you mean the end of each hair is silver or do you mean that there are silver hairs along the topline?

I guess the way I would describe it is ...the end of the hair is silver/grey (root black) along the topline neck to top back..I hope that helps.

Some people refer to it as salt and peppering, it is fairly common in some lines. My last litter had 5 males 4 females and 1 male has the peppering and 2 females. Dam's saddle is like this but Sire's is pure black.

It is also referred to as a "bitch stripe".I guess this is because it is more prevelant in bitches than dogs.My EG showline bitch back in the early nineties had it.It didn't start to appear until she was about six or seven months old.We only bred one litter with her.I kept in touch with of the pups and owners. Both females developed the stripe at the same age as mom, and none of the males ever got it.
