Why is it that females with a SchH3 title are so uncommon?

by spook101 on 19 November 2006 - 03:11

My opinion: The value doesn't change that much going from a Sch1 to a Sch3. They are harder to train than a male. (Males tend to be harder and more forgiving; a great deal of patience is needed for most female.) Females tend to be smaller and not as impressive in protection. (A lot of people want to see the heavy hitters even though correct work is what gets you the points.) And finally, through time, more emphasis is put on the males line for reproduction.

Also, many breeders get their first title(sch 1) and then start breeding..

It is very simple. It takes a tremendous amount of work to title a dog to SchH 3 level. Also, most people want to get something back right away out of a titled female and so they begin breeding her. Breeding makes it tough to find the right timing to continue training. Also, many dogs just barely make it to SchH1 and the dog is going to have a more difficult time going on unless it really is outstanding. It only gets harder and by the time a dog is at an upper level, judges will expect better work, especially in the protection phase. Many dogs who make it to SchH1 simply do not really have the drive to do well and so people loose interest too. I titled my female to SchH3 from nothing, and believe me, I could not tell you how much time and energy I put into it. But she is a rare female who has the right drives and she deserved to go as far as she could. I learned a lot doing it.

As a rule there are two things that lead to SchH3 in a female: Being a natural worker who learns quickly and easily or having a dedicated owner. A male will get few breedings if he is less than SchH3. Hence even the soft dogs are pulled through by hook or by crook.

Thats the biggest excuse in the book " Oh they are harder to train" Bullcrap! Females can get a SchH3 just as easy as the males depending on the lines.. The main problem is that breeders tend to spend more time breeding their SchH1 bitches rather than continue titling her up to SchH3.

I agree with Brittany. Having titled several females to SchH3, they are easier than some males. It is time consumming, and the reason for titling females is to breed them. You just have to work around their heat cycles and their breedings, but it can be done.

How about the bitch you wasted three or so years getting a SchH3 on and doesn't turn out to be a good producer even if she is a good dog? From my understanding some breeders prefer to breed as early as BH or SchH1 if the bitch shows the traits they are looking for, simply to see early on if she produces well and thus is worth 'taking there'.

I agree with Brittany too.The most buyer will breed with their females and they will not spend the money for the Schh2 and 3 title. My own females get their Schh3-titles in the age of 18 to 26 months befor the breeding.

Please, Brittnay, tell us how many females you have titled to a Schutzhund 3 and how long did it take you.
