I purchased a puppy 7 months ago and the breeder has still not sent any AKC paperwork. There is an indepth contract with the breeder and it covers the health and even mistreatment of the dog. I visited the kennel and saw both parents before purchasing the dog. I also asked many questions.
I guess the question is how long should it take to get the paperwork in from the AKC and then for me to recieve it? Thanks so much for any replies.

It could take a while if one of the parents was from out of country and has not been AKC registered yet.

Doug, I had a situation where AKC had made a computer error on my stud dogs record. It took a couple months to get them to correct their own error. However, they do take phone calls, and I'll bet you could find out from them if the litter registration is in process. Good luck!

If the parents are recent imports it can take a while to get all the paperwork first transfered in the country of origin and then get it processed through the AKC. Now also all forgein dogs need to have their dna to be filed prior to litter registration (this alone takes 6 weeks at the shortest!)
I am sure you will recieve the paperwork, it just might take time. You can call the AKC and see if they are processing the paperwork on the female.

this is indeed a legitmate situation when importing a pup or bred female....DNA takes 6 weeks, the female must be registered for the litter to be registered, the export pedigree must be done, and if the litter's sire is in Europe, depending on how many females have been imported bred to him, he may need to have a DNA done as well....that in particular can really throw a wrench into the process.
Although I think you need to be patient, you could ask if the export papers and DNA are done yet, and see where the breeder is in the process.

Doug says he went to the kennel and saw both parents. He has not stated in his post anything from being out of the country or foreign related. If this is in fact a local purchase, then I would say 7 months is too long. Doug contact the seller and also AKC as to where your dogs paperwork is.

I should have said that I did purchase the GSD dog here in the States.
Seemed to be a reputable and responsible breeder. I have never had to go through getting papers for a dog before and am a Novice in this area.
I went to Kennels and checked to make sure it was not a puppymill and watched the puppies for about two hours. I then returned and watched again for another two hours before making the selection.
Seller says the Sire is having DNA tested. I guess its just hard trusting anyone nowdays. (Shame on Me).
I have found this site to be very informative and thanks for the courteous replies.

7 mos is still a long time even with DNA required. Sounds like somebody sat on their thumbs before sending it in or it was lost on an AKC desk for a bit. I had to do the DNA twice on my bitch, the first didn't take. I still had everything squared away in 3 months. I didn't want my buyers thinking I was a dud in regards to paperwork. Then again the papers aren't needed until the dog is ready to be hip scored or bred so there isn't really a need to rush, other than to passify the buyer.
Yes you can call AKC and inquire about the paperwork, they will tell you if it is even there and being processed.

AKC DNA testing takes about 2 weeks, 3 tops to get results and DNA number from AKC. As 4pack and I both feel the same, 7 months is too long and I would be in Hot Pursuit of this seller for your dogs papers, and/or a reasonable logical explanation as to why he/she dont have them.

Seven months does seem excessively long. They need to get busy with it.
These are some of the things that can happen, Doug:
If they imported a female from out of the USA, and she came over bred to a foreign stud, it takes awhile.
It took me 4 1/2 months to get my last litter imported in utero registered with the AKC. Everything needs to be done sequentially now, you can't send it all in at once like you used to be able to do. It takes almost twice as long as it used to:
Vom Brunhaus: It took at least a month for my bitch's DNA to be processed, and I had to keep inquiring after it. They never notified me.
For this same female-litter paperwork process: My akc-beischinigung from Germany was lost by the USPS, I had to re-order it from the SV, and I had to pay for it again too. But at least the SV was efficient and got the second beischinigung out quickly. Still, I lost six weeks in waiting for it. I waited longer than I should have before I inquired after it.
It took me two weeks to get good pictures of my female. I had to get help, and we had to take pictures three times to get some that weren't blurred...she doesn't like to be still :-)
I have not personally had this happen, but if the stud owner did not sign the AKC Special litter application for you, you have to send it to Germany to be signed. Another delay.
Also, my entire registration packet submitted for a DIFFERENT female imported from Germany was lost somewhere--either by the USPS or the AKC--- all of my paperwork was lost: my beischinigung, application, pictures, etc. I had to resubmit it all over again. I do have to say that Brenda at the AKC registration department was very helpful, kind, efficient, and quick in expediting my resubmitted paperwork to help make up for lost time.
Those are just some of the things that can happen in registering a foreign female in the AKC, or even a foreign female who was imported in whelp and her resultant litter.
Like Bob-O says...cheers :-)
