Little known in his native Scotland,Alexander Gardner would emigrate to the U.S. and become the official war photographer for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Gardner was the first to capture images of dead soldiers on the battlefield, these images were printed in northern newspapers to a horrified audience .
Perhaps his best known capture was of the Confederate dead at Bloody Lane,Antietam.
The documentary is available on BBC iPlayer for those that are interested.
Almost impeccable timing by the BBC,it was shown the day after the 150th anniversary of Antietam.
