Hi all, can anyone share what they are using on the floor of their kennels? I just put a up a kennel in half of my garage for my Mal pup. There will be a crate for her to sleep in, but I worry about her walking and laying on concrete all day. Anything wrong with putting a layer of mixed cedar/pine shavings on the floor?

If you don't mind sweeping up the ones that get out of the kennel, shavings work well. I've used them for years in any kennel that has a cement bottom. Makes clean up easier.
If your dog is reliable, and won't potty in the kennel, you can also put an area rug down to give them something soft to be on.

I layed horse stall mats down in my kennels. So far they have been working great :-)

Victoria, do you not have an issue with the dogs chewing the mats? I've wanted to try this, but have hesitated because of this possibility.

I like the aluminum Kuranda bed for getting a dog off of concrete. My female GSD did her best to chew it but quickly gave up. She's the dog who chewed up a heavy duty horse stall mat (vomit everywhere!) and eventually chewed her way through her kennel.

I think no matter what you lie over top of concrete you cannot get rid of the dampness of it. My horses have stall mats and shavings on the floor of their stalls. When they go out in the mornings in the winter they are always stiff walking out, yet in the summer ( they stay outside ) they walk around without any problems at all. I would never leave a dog on concrete all day even if you try and cover it with mats and shavings. That is just my opinion. I know that when I do a trade show and have a thick carpet on the floor over concrete, I can't walk the next day, my hips and knees just ache. I don't think puppies or dogs should lie on concrete for long periods.

I agree, I have my pups on Rubber horse mats, with non dusty shavings, then I put some straw in the corner, so they have an extra option. The trick is to fit the mats very well over the entire very well leveled stall floor, and hopefully they can not dig them up.
where their drinking water is I put large tiles

I also have stall mats in my kennel. VLA is right...the secret is to fit them well against the walls so they can't dig up the corners. You can see the scratch marks where my boy attempted to get up the corners, but he has since given up.
