Hey gang.
I took my 9 year old Lab to the vet a week ago, he had what apperaed to be a small tumour on his jaw. It was small and the vet told me to keep an eye on it and he was fine then suddenly 2 days ago it started to swell up, getting bigger and bigger. Then the morning after I took him to do his buisness and noticed blood coming from the swelling (we were on our way to the vets office). So we rushed there, his lips on the right side was swollen and his cheek as well. There was only thin blood coming out not puss.
He was sedated and a hole was punched in the swollen area to let out ALL the blood and there was a lot. No puss came out, just blood. There was a quite a deep hole into his cheek. (not sure I'm getting it across correctly - sorry).
Also a small cut was made to his lips on the inside and blood came out there.

He is now on Rimadyl anti swelling and reduces fever. He is also on Clamoxyl antibiotics.
This was very similar to a blood ear, but my vets had never seen one on a dogs cheek, nothing seemed to have penetrated him, he hasn't been in any dog on dog action. So just wondering wheter you guys have had this happen? I will include photos - who dosen't love photos ?

Photo taken after his first vet visit. Nothing visable on his right cheek.

During surgery, his lips and cheeks are massive..

And all woken up after surgery. He was a good boy during all of this :)

Poor dog!
That must be very painful.
Yes, my dog had that, too. We traced it back to a blow on a cheek that caused a Saliva gland (between ear and mouth) to rip. Blood filled the cheek and the dog was in a lot of pain.
It got drained, just as with your dog. Afterwards external camphor creme, excluding the areas where the skin was cut, helped to get the swelling down quickly.

Great that you got him taken care of quick, he will be fine, it will heal well.

Looks like snake bite. I had a husky x that had clogged salivary gland and his cheek swelled...too many years ago to remember what my vet did, but I think he lanced it.

Thank you all for your input. Today there is nothing but a little swelling around the small wound on his cheek. He was a bit groggy for the day but quick to recover :)
No snakes in my country. At least not legally and they can't survive the cold .

Yes, I've had dogs with blood tumors. They can be either benign or malignant. Just had two removed from a female GSD. One was benign. The other was cancer but with clear margins; that means the vet cut out all the cancer. You can't tell just by looking which is which so  trip to the vet is called for. And you have to have the tumor biopsied by a good veterinary lab to find out which it is. They heal up quickly when you catch the tumor when it's small. The only problem is the shaved area and the worry that you might find another one some day. Just keep an eye out.

You might check for a cutareba larva ...  They can get as much as 2" long, whiteish barrel shaped.  Don't really seem to cause a great deal of pain to the dog/cat, but are pretty gross.  I've helped remove a number of them while working for the Vet.  Try expressing the hallow pocket to press it toward the opening.  If you see something you may be able to get hold of it with a pair of tweezers, or return to the Vet for it to be removed with a longer probe under sedataion, or anesthesia.

Thank you windwalker. But we don't have any parasites in Iceland (where I live) only rare cases of tics.
We are on day 6 and he is a lot better. It annoys him a bit and he scratches and if that continues he might need a cone, but hopefully not. Thank you all for your input.

Ah, that explains "no snakes" lol. But now you know what a snake bite looks like:) Good thing it's not a bite, my eight year old GSD was bitten on her tongue and the bite area became necrotic. That part of her tongue sloughed.
