I'm no expert, but, seeing as it is a young pup my first thought would be to ask about the worming schedule.  Then the amount being fed.  I have found that overfeeding will sometimes cause this and have had to tweak the amount or even go back to breaking feedings into three to give proper amount without having runs.  Then I would consider food change.

There are certainly other things that can cause this, but, my instinct is to check these easy things first.  After that, I defer to the experts. I'm sure people here can help you.

i feed him twice a day amount 1 1/2 cups each feeding

Try putting him on 3 feeds again - therefore reducing the amount he is having in one feed - this should help. Dont over tit-bit feed either as this will be taking away the balance of the complete food. All the best. Sharon

Yep - make sure it isn't worms first and then my next questions are : what has he been chewing on? Has he gotten into anything...been outside? chewed on grass or eaten anything weird, etc. Check/Control environment.

My GSD did the exact same thing. Only fed it for 2 days and gave it away. Went back to old feed and they stopped the runs almost instantly.

would the fact he has been on adult food have anything to do with

by hodie on 13 November 2006 - 22:11

Do not constantly switch food. Did you just switch from puppy food to adult food? To do so may not allow the gut to adjust. This has been talked about many times before on this forum. The first thing to do is to have the dog either wormed again, or take in a stool sample for a check for parasites. Royal Canin is an excellent food. That being said, if the parasite issue is ruled out, the stool checked for bacterial, giardia, tapeworm etc., then there are other problems that might be present. Of you continue to have problems email me directly and I can probably help. Reducing the amount fed may help, but it may not. If you just switched food, he/she may not have the right bacterial flora in the gut to easily digest the food. Or, there could be another problem. If the pup is getting into dirt, rocks, weeds, or anything else, that can cause problems.

There are about 20 ?'s or so that could/should be asked before making any assumptions to "softened stool" antibiotics lately ? Worming lately ? Fever lately ? Food Change ? on and on... and some have been addressed, How about Probotics ???? (the good tummy bugs) The "good tummy bugs" can become damaged when dogs are exposed to antibiotics, fever, and stress. So when I notice a soft stool, I will first try Probios, a product you can get at any feed store 100% safe !!! you can also replace these "good bugs" with yogurt. Everyone seems to "overlook" this when it comes to this subject.
