Just wondering if anyone had any advise. I have a young female just coming up to 12mths. She had her first season beginning of Sept.06 and finished end of Sept.06. She did bleed for around 15 days, took her to the vet to ensure no underlying problems as bleeding was longer than what I had anticipated. Anyway season ended all well. My dog in the last few days has taken great interest in her, ie he wants to mate her and has gotten slightly aggressive with this. But as her season has come and gone, why would this be??? Her nipples are slighly enlarged which is another concern....she was not under any circustances mated in her first season, she was kept well away from all interest males. Has anyone else ever had this type of issue?? Any advise would also help.

Nilco, Silent heat possibly... Silent heat, when no bleeding is present but the dog actually cycles. I would immediately seperate her, (if you have not yet done so) to prevent any Accidents. It's not "uncommon" for yearlings to have messed up heat cycles, 3 of 5 of our yearlings went through first heat, then about 2 months later, went through another abnormal type cycle, I have seen this several times with yearlings, until they get they're hormones and bodies in line they're pretty out of wack with the whole "system" (laughing) Poor things trying to figure out how this all works and they're bodies not cooperating and driving the boys NUTS !! Only advice I can offer at this time is Separation !! If he's interested there is a reason for it.

Nilco, I agree with the chance of a silent heat. I advise to watch for any type of discharge. She is a youngster, and her body is still maturing and could very well be off-cycle. Bob-O

One of ours had a split heat her very first heat cycle. Sounds similar. Keep yours seperate from the male. Ours has been cycling normal ever since.

One of my bitches had her first cycle at 6 mos, and then again at 9 mos. She was pretty erratic for a while, and eventually settled into a predictable, tiwce a year pattern. In my experience, any time a dog shows interest, I take him seriously. It seems they don't lie. I have heard that if the female has an infection (urinary or other) that can sometimes cause some extra interest, but I haven't had any experience with this with any of my dogs.

Another question to this is: is your female acting like she's receptive? Is she standing with her tail flagged, is she flirting with him?
