As working lines become more "popular" we are already seeing an influx of breeders / websites. While selective breedings in the past have somewhat preserved working values you will see more and more problems creeping into these breeds.
My only hope is that since so many people prefer the black and red GSD'S that more knowledgable people are the ones wanting the working lines of different sables, blacks and bi-colors.

Are you implying that only idiots would want the black and reds? ha ha
Just not completely following what you wrote.

not following completely eighther, But will only say that I don't beleive that "working" ability is determined by color. :-)

Yes, how often do you see someone lable a dog as working simply because it is sable.
by EchoMeadows on 12 November 2006 - 13:11
Fred Yes your right typically I see it as follows:
Sable = working
black = working
bicolor = show
blk red = show
blk tan = pet
white = pet
This is how I see dogs being Labeled... However I feel it is unfair to label them in this fashion.
I don't judge working ability or showing ability based on color factor. I have seen a Sable bitch shown at AKC and she won everything I think it was about a year or two ago.
I have seen some super blk & red working dogs, females and males. Some super blk & red females biting !!!!
The whites well in my opinion are not even "great" pets as the ones I have seen have not had temperament that I would put into my home, flighty, unerved, and fearful. Now mind you I have been exposed to very few whites and do take that into consideration.
Bottom line is color can not be the determining factor when it comes to working/showing ability unless that color is considered a fault, (ie the whites) which would prohibit the dog from being shown.
Everyone has prefferences when it comes to color, But does not mean one color is better than the other at any specific task !!!

I plan on getting into workinglines, I've been doing my homework for over nine months before I even settled on a breeder...does that make me the next idiot breeder? Not trying to rile, just asking a question. And for the record, my puppy is pure black...not sable. I have also seen some lovely bi-colored and pure black showlines, incase anyone was wondering. DR, please clarify this for us,
Krista

Uh Oh...somebody better tell Mink he was a showline. LOL Echo what you say is true though. GSD's are a little subject to doggie racism.
by EchoMeadows on 12 November 2006 - 14:11
4pack, OMG I almost fell out of my chair ROFL
doggie racism Oh my gosh that is tooooo funny !!

by 4pack on 12 November 2006 - 14:11
Funny thing is, I wasn't trying to be funny. A lot of people see a sable and label it "working" same with black and red, "show".

It does seem as the working line is getting a boost in popularity. As new people enter I would recommend taking note of the traits with in the blood line you consider. Many different packages, one does not fit all.
