My puppy (DDR/Czech lines) who is now five months old is very bad at submissive peeing. She used to do it when my other dog (male Doberman) approached her but that has improved/stopped, but whenever I try to open her mouth, do her nails, pick her up, etc., she urinates. I've never experienced this with any of my other dogs (been in Dobes for 21 years), but this is my first German shepherd. I do not scold her for doing this - just ignore it and clean it up. Has anybody experienced this and will it improve in time as she gets older? Thanks in advance for your help.

The probability of her growing out of it is good.
What may help for the time being, is anytime you want to do some hands on (this seems to be the problem area?) try to distract her with the other hand or put food or a toy, on the floor to keep her busy while you do what you are doing. She will most likely get used to it. If not, then the concensis of most folks is that she has a nerve issue. For your sake I hope not! Good luck!
So many forget that not ALL working lines work. Not ALL puppies in a working line litter necessarily turn out to be good at bite work. I have seen that first hand in a working line schutzhund club. To me that is why puppy testing is so valuable if done right. It gives you a good idea as to what is inside. It's not totally infallible, but atleast it gives you a peak into what you have to start working with.

Yes,I remember it all too well.I dont have the poor dog anymore as I had to put him down 4 days before his first birthday due to several problems. It sounds like you are doing the right thing by ignoring it.I know that it can get fraustrating but you can almost be sure that as the dog matures and starts to trust you it should stop on its own.Patients will help you get through this

J7520,
If you wouldn't mind, I am soon purchasing a DDR/Czech GSD puppy, and I would like to know the lines of your submissive peeing puppy. If its too personal or you just don't want to publicly share it, please email me personally, Thank you and hope to hear from you soon!

j7520, the only suggestion that I can make is that you should work to build her confidence and self esteem. The presence of male Dobie may have been a bit too much too soon for her, especially if he dominated her heavily. She eventually needs to face him some day, and face a lot of other things as well. She needs the confidence to do this.
Past that, even from the best lines one occassionaly gets one (1) like this, and not always a female. Many tend to improve as they age, but a few are timid (and possibly dangerous) for the remains of their lives.

I have a 10 month old female that would submissive pee up until she as about 8 months old. She has a nice drive and is outgoing and confident. Not sure if she just grew out of it or if building her confidence and drive solved the problem.l I am happy to say it is no longer a issue.
Good luck!

Thanks so much for the responses I've gotten thus far regarding submissive peeing. I guess I should clarify some things about my puppy. She is extremely confident and sure of herself in any situation I've put her in. At eight weeks of age when I took her out in public she was outgoing and friendly with strangers but when they leaned down over her to pet her, she would urinate. She's now five months old and is fine with strangers messing with her but still continues to be intimidated by me so we will work on confidence issues and hopefully she will outgrow this. And, I agree, I did throw my male Dobe at her a little too quickly but after a separation period while she got some size to her, they have become fast friends. Thanks again.

I too had a female that outgrew the peeing. However I believe it wasn't submissive peeing but peeing from excitement. It generally only happened when I greeted her after comming home or in the mornings when she was in a highly excited/aggitated state of mind. At first I was greeting her excitedly talking to her in a high pitch. I relized the way I was greeting her contributed to and encoraged her excitement. I began ignoring her and let her right outside. Then only gave her attention softly after she calmed down and her bladder was empty.
