can a one-testicle dog inseminate? I've read it is possible. Thanks

by D.H. on 10 November 2006 - 18:11

yes, and quite possibly pass on this trait. Such a dog should be neutered or have a vasectomy done on the intact testicle and the retained testicle removed, to avoid possible breeding accidents.

And what D.H. said should be done as soon as possible to avoid any "accidents".

Me too! Sure insemination is possible, but why would you breed a dog that would pass on this fault??

by Dawnmarie on 10 November 2006 - 22:11

I do not suggest neutering any male until maturity no matter how many testicles Less chance medical issues when waiting. when we remove the hormones, the research my mentores and myself have done, it is proven by vet stats to increase risk to certain cancers by neutering before maturity, which is approx 14 months old... also can contribute to signs symptoms of a dog predisposed for HD as well... some vets feel it can cause an increased chance of HD neutering early. we shouldnt be selling puppies to irresponsible homes in the first place anyway, i do have in my contract dog are not allowed to be bred on purpose or by accident :) they lose their health guarantee if they let that happen... and i read to them the responsibilities of a stud dog owner to scare them from thinking how "neat" it would be.... i am very fortunate, thus far, to not have problems with folks letting their males breed prior to neutering if they do wish to neuter after 14 months old. I actually ask them to wait til 2yrs old so they will be under for the surgery and can get OFA done the same day so i get an idea of how we are producing hips... results go to me. yes all dogs get illness and disease, but it seems out of my friends and breeder friends, intact amimals lead much longer healthier lives

"intact amimals lead much longer healthier lives" That's a crock where dogs with retained testicles are concerned--they are at much greater risk for testicular cancer. It is also a crock so far as females are concerned--they are at greater risk for pyometra and mammary cancer.

A agree w/ Dawnmarie as far as not neutering till the dog is mature. The best thing to do w/ a cryptorchid is to have the retained testicle removed before 1yr old, then remove the other one after two years when the dog is done maturing. The retained testicle is a health risk so should be removed asap, but the dog should keep the other one to mature mentally and physically properly. With that said the owner MUST be responsible during this time when he is intact and not allow him to breed.

GSDfan, well said. I hope we ae all jumping to a conclusion here. SJS never said he/she was stupid enough to breed a dog like that. That would be completely irresponsible. I am hoping he/she is smarter than that. True enough, benefit of doubt,he/she may be curious only.
