I just recieved the deeply saddening news that SV Judge Tom Mitchell has passsed away. The Schutzhund sport community has lost a dear friend, fine sportsman, and uniquely wonderful character.
I know for a fact that quite a few of my dogs recognized and welcomed Tom at Rainbow Bridge. I, for one, shall ever be grateful to him for his clear understanding and appreciation of true "working dog" temperament, and his career-long belief in considering the "predicate" (the over-all "picture" of dog and handler "as a team," harmonious and closely bonded) as a strong element in his evaluations of trial performance.
Tom's sharp intelligence, quick wit, and great sense of humor will be sorely missed by the hundreds of friends he made during his decades of dedication, generously serving the breed he loved and advancing the sport meant to preserve it.
God rest his soul.

I didn't expect to see that this morning.
Sad news.
Tom and I had our differences but he was one, like you said, to have a clear understanding and appreciation of the working dog temperament.
OLD SCHOOL ...laking in some of the younger people in the sport.
We are thenkful for all the years he has dedicated to this sport.
Our heartfelt condolences go to his family.

Tom's dog was laying at his side when they found him in his home, ever dutiful and devoted, still tending his beloved friend long-since passed, perhaps for as long as three full days.
I hope there is someone the old guy knows and trusts
to love him and care for him till the day comes to go join his friend at the bridge. Chances are it won't be long till that day comes, but I hate to think of the old dog failing, neglected and depressed having lost his human companion.

What a shock! Tom was the tracking judge when I qualified to go to the WUSV in 1998. I met him a few other times at different trials. Old school to the defination, but just a great guy. I will miss him. God bless his soul.

Tom came and judged 3 trials for our club in the last 2 years. He was a good guy, very old school but just full of knowledge. He was always willing to share what he knew. He will be greately missed!
