Other than mother and fathers AKC registration numbers, how do you tell or can you tell what line or type German Shepherd I have, other than smart alert, and playfull, and really alert (watches things like birds and other dogs) . I tried this data base but neither the sire or dam show up.

You are supposed to enter your own dog's pedigree into the database. Some can tell by the conformation differences in a glance, often combined with typical color patterns, and by the titles for the appropriate venues.

There are 5+ male blood lines. You go from male to male to male to ...........to male .....until you run into specific dog which is the starter of the bloodline. PDB is excellent source to track and figure out your dogs blood line.

If your dog is registered with the AKC, you can order a pedigree from them.

After you get the pedigree, you can enter the information into this database and see if there are any other dogs related to yours, and also what the lineage traces to.

That will show what type of bloodline your dog came from.

If you live near the AKC building in NC or in NYC, then you can even research the pedigree yourself, as they have a set of studbooks available in their library.

What are the names of the parents of your dog??

Someone reading this might recognize them.. and might be able to help you.

Your breeder, or the person who sold you the dog should have accurate copies of the pedigree in their possession...  can you contact them??

If you are trying to determine a dog's "type" by looking at the dog, it takes a very well practiced and skilled/talented eye and good knowledge of all the types.  Even the best cannot always tell.

If you are talking about determining "type" by looking at the pedigree, then yes, people with good knowledge of kennel names/famous dogs and pedigrees can tell what type a dog is.

When searching for a dog on the pedigree database, only enter in part of the name, you are more likely to find a dog this way.  Often times if you try to enter the whole name you will not get a result (because the name may not be registered in the PDB exactly as you typed it)

What are the names of the sire and dam?  Do you have the grand-parent's names too?

I'm gonna get killed for this, but if it is a shitter, most likely it is showlines or DDR "100%". Sorry, I had to. I couldn't resist. Do what others have said. See if the parents are in the database. If not, you'll have to call the breeder to find the grandparents or order a pedigree with akc. In all reality, you have the dog, and if you like the dog, what does it matter? We are a funny group. We meet people of the opposite sex and propose marriages. Did any of you research your spouses pedigree and family health? Doubt it, and supposedly you're stuck with them for decades, while a dog lasts maybe 12 years.

I think they should have advance placement HS courses on that exact subject, Chaz. Divorce rates would plummet. My thoughts include:

Researching your Betrothed: from DNA to PDA, 101....
And then how about,
Prince Charming is a Con Man, 102.
He Already Has A Mother, 103.

These of course, are only the pre=requisites.

I love Showlines, so I don't think they are shitters, so there.

I don't either. Maybe the op didn't think to ask the breeder. And YR, you're always a winner. Except in football.
