Friday night I was at Schutzhund club, several members were there, all with beautiful GSD's. They were healthy, had plenty of drive and doing very well with OB and Protections........come to find out that half the dogs were from local rescue organizations.......the director of training is working is temper testing and matching up sport prospects with a waiting list of people who are interested in training....what a win-win for both dog and new owner....

Good for your club and your TD.
Lots of people buy working dogs with no idea of what kind of commitment in needed and they wind up in rescue or getting returned to the breeder. A win win solution :-)

Thats pretty impressive sitasmom.
Most rescues tend to frown on anyone
doing 'bitework' with 'their' dogs. So
it's nice to see that perhaps the times
are a changing!

WOW:  that is the best news;  makes me so happy.  Our rescue here of course picks up anything and everything and lists it under GSD's;  you just do not know what you are getting or anything about the health, etc.  Probably do temp testing also, at least I hope they do, but??

I agree, most rescues won't even take a dog with a bite history or one that has been trained in Schutzhund or a retired Police K9, I am one of the very few, and the only reason I CAN and DO, is because I am NOT a 501c3, They have to answer to their insurance companies and board members, I am just me and do it because I love the dogs, so I can take the tough dogs on!!!! I like the challenges, and then I will place them where they will be utilized the best. I believe a dog should go to the home where they are best suited, to what they do best....match the dog with the right family or situation.

I tried to adopt a Brittany from NBRAN once to use for hunting, they refused me, because I wanted to use the dog for pheasant hunting, duh??? What are they bred to do??? I ended up training one of my GSD's for pheasant hunting instead!!!

So a GSD or Malinois, if they have the right credentials, should do what it does best...

Great idea!  I wish more clubs would do the same.  I know there are great dogs being put down because they are not being matched up properly.  Truly a win - win!!

Steph, you are the best!  I've seen what you do up close and personal and wish I could do the same.  I hate to think what would have happened to Adis if you hadn't stepped up.  His grandson was giving the neighbor hell yesterday afternoon.  The neighbor was throwing brush up against our fence, building a brush pile which I'm pretty sure isn't allowed in our city by-laws etc.  Wish you could have seen Ziggy in action.  LOL  I'll probably have to go have a talk with the moron since that is my fence he is piling stuff up against and I don't appreciate it.  Good for Ziggy for letting me know someone was messing with "his" property.  LOL

I actually started a thread a while back on rescue contracts and what they can actually enforce and what condoned uses of the dog could actually be defined legally.  I even had a family friend lawyer do some preliminary research.  Basically its not simply participating in Schutzhund , French Ring or Belgian Ringsport .  Its specifically bitework training that causes issues and even then, rescue contracts violated property laws in most states and would be very difficult to enforce.  Overall I think that means rescues can and should can do a BH, FH, OB, AD, RH, herding etc.  I would be especially interested in seeing more clubs do the RH and herding, so more rescues can get into schutzhund type training as opposed to AKC venues only.  I've also heard that the way French Ring is structured a dog could skip the "Attack with Gun"  portion and still title.
