Hi Bee I bet you thought I forgot. I read it in about 5 days. I really liked it-good story. You asked about it from a native point of view. Well I hate to see stories written where they out and out use untruths in talking about certain peoples of any race. Had she made up things and places I think it would have been better. In this case she was mixing up different tribes. She talked about that Pioneer Woman statue--yes there is one in Ponca City OK which is in the north and close to the Kansas border. It is nowhere near the Cherokee Nation which is a Nation and not a rez, never has been. The Poncas were Plains people and warriors whereas the Cherokee are one of the 5 Civilized tribes. Big difference. Also sounds like Turtle had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or maybe brain damage from her mom huffing paint which is a big thing in the Ponca City area. I would far more believe the lady who brought her to the car and gave her to the lady to be Ponca as opposed to Cherokee, knowing them as I do. Probably woke up the next morning and wondered where in the heck her kid was. Also I don't know every Indian name in the book but in every community there are certain families with certain last names--I have never heard the last name Two Two in any tribe so she must have made that up. Had she done a little research she could have found a believable name--like Soap or Bushyhead or Fourkiller which are very common Cherokee names. (among others) So that is my take on that. But it was a book that draws you in and shocking tho it was I'm glad she did what she did to keep Turtle. At first I thought maybe she was going to give her to the Guatamalan people--smooth move on her part tho in real life it could never happen. Indian Child Welfare Act---very rarely do they adopt out Native children to non Native homes. Thanks for turning me on to it and if you know any others please tell......................

I bet you thought I forgot! LOL

Thanks for taking the time to give your thoughts. Very interesting. I can see where the "creative license" has come into play. I don't have the book any more, I always "lend" them out and very rarely get anything back. The only one who is good at giving books back is my girlfriends 90+ year old mother!  She's like my best book trading buddy, LOL

If you liked that one, here is another one you might like it, in a different multi-cultural vein. It is set in South Africa, 1989 and is written from the point of view of 11 year old, white boy Jack V., who comes of age at the time the country is changing, too. He betrays "Susie", the housekeeper who he considers his "second Mom" and  that's all I will tell you.

It is called "The Dubious Salvation of Jack V." , by Jacques Strauss. It is a quick, and often funny read, surprisingly enough.

Awesome I will look for that book next time I go to the library. Thanks--I am always looking for good stuff to read.
Also I wanted to tell you about these books I found. They are put out by Guideposts and all written by different authors but they use the same characters. The fictional town is Acorn Hill and it is located in Lancaster County PA. It's 3 sisters who run a B&B and they have sort of wacked out auntie who is a main character also. The series is called Tales from Grace Chapel Inn.  The one I am reading now is called Small-Town Reality by Carolyne Aarsen. Basically these people show up in this country town to do a reality show about the beauty shop. They are small, read fast and even tho they are based on sort of religious stuff-like Guideposts--they don't pound it in your head and all. Just good clean country books.................I'm not very far into this one but I can't wait to see how this escapade is going to turn out. LOL. Especially since the auntie--who's in her 70's and a gossip decided to dye her hair and ended up with pink streaks in it and is now wearing hats everywhere. LOL..............Just good clean fun..........
