What are the best dry dog foods to feed a geman shepherd puppy?

by HighDesertGSD on 26 July 2012 - 16:07

Best is hard to say.

If you have Costco membership, the Kirkland chicken based pup food is good. It is rather rich in protein and moderate in fat and only moderately high in calcium.

One common characteristic of dry  kibble is low fat, moderate protein, and rather high calcium. One can only pick one that has only moderately higher than ideal in calcium.

Never feed a GSD pup free choice. Food intake must be regulated to achieve a lean pup.

NO NO NO and HELL NO Kirkland is made by Diamon Dog Food,  Haven't you seen the recalls in the news!!!!!  Please Google the Diamond recall to see how many other brands made by them have also been recalled and never give them a dime.  Fromms Gold is great, family owned, high quality and you get every 13th bag free.

A recall does not discredit a company for good.

I am sticking with Kirkland. Very good for the price.

I feed Diamond products and have not had a problem yet. and will continue to do so.

WOW ......... I agree it does not discredit a company for good food as Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance was also under recall and they are a good food .....BUT that is not the issue here ..... how many dogs have died from bad food to initiate the recalls?  Many ....to damn many .....

Now, if you want to continue to use their food...the only thing you are doing is playing russian roulette with your dog every time you feed them .....

Diamond Brand has had about 5 recalls in the last 6 yrs in which 100's of dogs and cats have perished........ I dont have a 10 dollar dog so I guess I might be a little more concerned

Here is the list I would recommend to stay away from :
  •
  • 4Health
  • Apex
  • Canidae
  • Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
  • Country Value
  • Diamond
  • Diamond Naturals
  • Kirkland Signature
  • Natural Balance
  • Premium Edge
  • Professional
  • Solid Gold
  • Taste of the Wild
  • Wellness

Does any body on this thread know what voluntary means? No dogs died of salmonella poisoning. Children got sick. I think I've said this three times on three different threads.
People, try to understand the ramifications of it all.

Beetree....I beg to differ ...over the past 6 yrs their recalls have been the cause of 100's of Dog and Cat deaths ....can you debunk this claim?

I have fed Diamond for 20+ years with never a single sick dog, the dogs love it, they are excellent condition, so I will continue to use it.  I find it quite comical that for YEARS on this board people swore by TOTW, and how good they thought it was, until they heard of the recall, then all of a sudden it is shit food?????????  NOT HARDLY!  The people who swore by the TOTW should be ashamed of themselves by all of a sudden talking crap about THE EXACT SAME FOOD.

So what you're saying jenni von that if you feed a food that has been recalled, then you have a 10.00 dog?
