broken toe, Can you do anything?

A friend called me this morning saying his dog had broken her toe, it was out sideways. I am assuming like people there is not much you can do about it.. am i correct?

How do you know it broken, may it only be dislocated?

If the dog owners bone was broken would he/she go to the doctor?

i guess it could be dislocated. I have broken toes tons of times it comes with owning horses, doctors cant really do anything about it, so no i dont go to the doctor over a broken toe.

Well no I probably wouldn't go to a doctor if I broke a toe now, having broken two in the past - but it would seem
crazy for any number of reasons not to get this dog checked out by a vet., even if there isn't a great deal they can
do about it - they can check out the dislocation possibility, advise on how much crate-rest might be needed, etc.

This must be one of the dumbest questions ever asked here. If the owner's toe were "out side ways" I doubt there would be any question that he would have a doctor take a look.

If the toe is bent out sideways...then it needs to be looked at by a vet...X-rayed and maybe reset...but if nothing is done then this is the way it will stay and could cause more problems in the future...

I understand trying to save money where possible...but sometimes it's necessary to spend some to have a problem corrected...

Yes...I'm sure you could leave the toe as it is...but the dog might be in pain and it might cause more of a problem later on...Depending on how bad it is and what the dog does...

I would suggest taking the dog in and having a vet look at it and like I said...probably have it x-rayed and probably reset...

I have been told by a canine ortho specialist that broken toes can be pretty significant.... My dog still has issues 3 years after a broken toe. I did not go to a specialist at the time. Wish I had.

take dog to vet, have xray, if broken, it can be set and splinted, if dislocated it can be put back in place and splinted.......
