I need some help here..... I purchased what was supposed to be an "elite family companion" with obedience training, I paid $1500.00 for the dog plus shipping, he was supposed to be crate trained, housebroken, obedience trained, laid back easy dog, good with small dogs and small children and an excellent match for a busy family with a small child. He was supposed to not have any medical history or issues of a medical nature, he was supposed to be 5 years old a neutered male approximatley 80 pounds. That is what I paid for and that is what I paid to ship even though the original quote of $3025.00 was to include shipping and training on a treadmill and service dog certification, vest and i.d. cards. We opted out of said dog because he was out of our price range. Breeder had an emergency and decided to let us have him for the $1500.00 plus shipping. with no service dog cert and no treadmill training. Oh yeah and of course no AKC or pink papers have been provided, no transfer of tattoo or microchip as was included in the purchase price.

What I got was a 69 pound neutered male who's teeth were completely covered in tartar and were green, black, and gray, his canines are worn flat on the tops and are stained brwon in the center our vet gave us an estimate on the procedure he feels would best adress this for $1200-$1300, he spins, paces and defecates in the house, can't leave him in a crate because all he does is spin, pant and poop and then spins in that. Can't leave him in a gated kitchen because he gets up on the counters and tears up anything he can get his mouth on or constantly paces and poops. He is not good with my old dog and because he has been so grossly misrepresented I do not want him around my child.

Breeder has conceited a refund of purchase price only and wants me to pay additional shipping to send dog back to her...Is this common practice, I would have NEVER purchased this dog that was sent to me so why should I pay to send him back and shouldn't I be entitled to my shipping costs to be refunded as well?
this SUCKS for me and theis poor DOG who is not at all to blame, but obviously not a family pet.

Thanks

Shipping/transportation is always at the buyers expense regardless if the dog is from the US or other parts of the world. I feel sorry for the dog!

Not making excuses and I do not know Kimberly or anyone connected with Von Hayden I do know they experienced some severe damage due to a storm about 3 weeks ago.  I think they lost their home and kennel.  That may be why they have not responded.  There is however no excuse for sending a dog to someone which was not what they thought they were buying.  Perhaps the next time you might consider someone you can visit.

Post pictures and videos of said dog. I'd like to see such conditions if you are making a bad name of someone.
Knowing this breeder, there was a devistating emergency. Only hearing your side with no evidence, who really knows the truth of this.

Has the dog have had any time to get used to a new enviroment and new people? The dog is 5 yrs old and most likely lived in a kennel. Takes some time for him the get used to house rules jmo.

A 5yr old sound dog with decent nerve/temperment
should not be shitting/pissing/spinning in a crate,
even if the dog has changed hands. The crate should
be his one 'safe & known' place.

This breeder has had similar issues pop up with other clients,
and it's weird how there always seems to be some sort
of 'drama/trama/emergency' etc that keeps the breeder
from responding to the buyer after the dog/pup is shipped
and the client realizes they didn't  get what was promised.

I'd fly/drive there with the dog myself and make sure the
breeder has cash in hand.

Yes, it sucks you will have to pay to send the dog back.
It's not fair, you were sent what you didn't want.
And you are very wise to keep this dog away from your
child.

To play devil's advocate, alarms and red flags should have
gone off when there was all of a sudden tremendous
price reduction. And, since you found this board to voice
your complaint on, you could have done a simple search
on here, or even Google etc to find this is not an isolated
incident with this breeder before you took advantage of
the sudden 'fire sale price' on this dog.

Good luck, I feel sorry for the dog.
It's always the animals that suffer the price.

Well, thank you everyone for your input, I did get a refund on the purchase price only of the dog which I am grateful for, I am now in the process of getting his flights booked and sending him back to Von Hayden on my dime which totally sucks, because it was an expensive lesson learned and I feel bad for Vice von Hayden because I am sending him back to where he was not properly cared for in the first place. Too bad for him.
I am glad that the breeder did the right thing in refunding my purchase price, but I am not at all happy about paying so much money for nothing because I was lied to and the dog was GROSSLY misrepresented.
Thanks von-Hayden for such an expensive, stressful, poop filled, sleepless week and a half, I should have kept a scrapbook of it because it cost more than a vacation.

Funny, but not funny I'm sure.

The shipping part does suck, and it was an expensive lesson.  One that others can learn much cheaper by you sharing your story.
I hope your next dog/puppy experience goes smoother. :)

If you are going to look for another dog and give your general location I'm sure you can get some referrals of breeders within a few hour drive of you.   Not only will you save on shipping but you will get a chance to see and meet the dog first.  I think that is so very important, especially with anything past the puppy age.

by workingdogz on 25 July 2012 - 10:07

Post your general location and like Betty said, many will
recommend ethical and honest breeders to send you to.

It's a sad situation for the dog, money can be made again,
the animal is always the one that suffers.

For the future? If it sounds too good to be true? It most
likely IS.
