I'm just curious, maybe someone knows. What's the lowest HD Zuchtwert of a dog at the moment? What dog is it? How far can it go down?

Akira, the lowest I have seen is 60. I do not know which dog currently has the lowest HDZW. You could email the SV and they can certainly tell you. As far as how far it can go down, that would probably depend on the dog. Let's say a male dog started out with 60, and then had a TON of progeny who all (every puppy, every litter, was hip rated and scored "a" normal--not exactly feasible, but this is just an example) were rated at "a" normal, then the dog's ZW has the POTENTIAL to go down to 0, from what I understand. This is fairytale assumptions, however, because no dog produces PERFECT progeny every single time, nor does EVERY dog owner hip certify.

One occassionally sees a dog or bitch with a ZW that is in the high 60's. Obviously a very good producer from very good lines, if everyone is telling the truth and submitting ALL of the x-rays of the progeny and siblings. Since this practically never happens it is probably of little consequence, and the dog earned that low ZW first from its parents, so that is a reasonably good indicator. The progeny tell 1/2 of the true story, as the other 1/2 is dependent on the mate of choice. If you really want a better answer to your question you will need to go the S.V.'s ZW website and do some reseach by trial and error. Or perhaps examine the most current S.V. Genetics CD-ROM and see if you can import and parse the statistics through a Borland database programme. Of course a published ZW can go up and down a lot in a dog or bitch's lifetime depending on the success of their progeny's hip evaluations. So what is true at this moment might very well be different tomorrow morning. How far can it go down? That is a really good question, as mathematically one would think it could go as low as 50 if the dog is from perfect parents and makes perfect progeny. But, add all of the other ancestors into the equation and the number begins to rise. So I would say that if you see a dog or bitch in the high 60's, then that is probably as good as it is going to be for the moment. However, if that same dog eventually produces one (1) dysplastic puppy that is graded by the S.V. then that dog's ZW will increase dramatically and quickly. It will take a lot of excellent progeny to lower it, and it may never be as low as it was in the beginning. The ZW is of the most value when it no longer represents just the ancestors, but is proven by the progeny of the dog. Bob-O
