I am planning on breeding long coat shepherds in the future,  starting in approx.  a year.  I only want 2 litters a year at the most....maybe just one.   I am working on a web site and I am hoping to get some feed-back....any comments, suggestions, etc....would be GREATLY appreciated.  Again, this is absolutely in the beginning stages.  I am going to have a page with my dog's pedigrees,  a page where I will show puppies,  a page with some information such as ofa, general info. on shepherds, etc.... If anyone has any ideas of other things I might want to have on there that would be great.  The web site is:     www.woodbyslongcoatshepherds.com        I sure hope you guys will check it out and let me know what you think.    If you want to email me rather than post, my email is:    renegaderidge@yahoo.com      Thanks so much!!

I like your web page.  I must be honest in that I am not crazy about long haired Shepherds.  You might want to consider breeding Shilos.  Their tempermant is less than a GSD.  In my honest opinion a GSD that does not protect, conform to standard, and is not obediant after training is a clear breed fault.  A long haired dog by definition is a fault.  Sorry.

I wish you well but you wanted my honest thoughts.  Justice is blind, cruel, and fair.

I like your website design so far. You seem to really love your dogs, which is great. As a side note, don't forget to include pedigrees, OFA certifications and titles.

GSD Justice,

The AKC considers the long coat to be a fault, but the SV just  voted on allowing the long coats with undercoats. It became official in the SV since the last "Bundesversammlung". The SV has decided that there is no reason to ban Long Coats with an undercoat from breeding. It should start at the beginning of 2010 with separate rings in the shows and the Körung.
They cannot be bred with standard coat dogs, so Long Coats must be bred with ONLY Long Coats.
Long Coats without the undercoat is still a fault and these dogs will not be allowed in the breeding program.

I understand.  I am not opposing I am simply stating what the rule is.  I think she should breed Shilos instead of GSD's.  Please go to her web site.  She is not interesting in many of the traits a GSD owns.  Ok, fine.  Then breed another dog.

My apologies- I haven't gone to the website.

It appears to me that the breeder wants to breed a dog that it not consistent with a GSD but wants it to look like a GSD.  That, in my opinion, is a shilo.

I may be wrong, but I think my dogs do possess the traits of a gsd.... I just think a shepherd can protect without being mean and aggressive all the time.  I am not disputing you because I asked for your honest opinion,  I just want my dogs...any breed....to not be a threat when he or she isnt needed to be.  One thing I dont understand is why exactly the longcoat is considered a fault if it does not have an undercoat....isnt the coat determined by one gene....and that one gene ONLY determined hair length,  not temperment, trainabillity, etc.....if I am wrong please explain it to me because I really dont understand it.  It seems more like an appearance preference than a true fault..... I really do appreciate everyones thoughts and hope for lots more.  My web master is working on a pedigree page now,  and I will have the ofa's when I get them done....the females are only 1 yr. now and my male is only 4 months.  Thanks everyone and I hope to hear from more people!

I agree with you bondo's mom, but you are putting the cart before the horse. I am looking at your other posts, and your knowledge of the GSD and dogs in general appears very limited. Why not focus on raising your dogs, TRAINING them, getting some kind of performance title, try some UKC conformation, long coats are welcome there. Do those things, get all their health checks, research lines, THEN think about breeding. You are on the fast track to becoming a BYB if you don't.

Yes, I agree with KCzaja 100%. The best thing for you to do is forget about breeding right now and instead  work with your dogs and learn as much as you can. Remember also that the economy is very bad right now and the shelters and rescues are full of beautiful purebred dogs that will likely be euthanized. IMO Only the exceptional dogs should be bred, meaning dogs with good pedigrees, health, hips/elbows, structure and working ability. I am not saying that your dogs are not breed worthy, but at this point there is no way to know whether or not they are. I know your intentions are good and least you are trying to learn, which is wonderful, but please slow down.  I've had GSDs all my life and I still feel like I have a lot  to learn!
