How Effective is Limited Reg. or Spay/Neuter Clause for Breeders - Page 1

I'm just curious about pet quality pups that are sold with limited registration and with a spay/neuter clause or contract. How effective are these methods in keeping buyers from breeding non-breeder quality dogs? I mean, in my opinion, people are just going to do what they want with "their dogs". But how can someone be sure that the bloodlines resulting from their many years of breeding for bettering each generation is protected, and that the pet quality pups they sold are not contributing to the population of such an overwhelming number of unwanted dogs and puppies? Are there breeders out there who sell pups that have already been spayed or neutered, or do spay/neuter clauses and limited registration papers ensure that the buyer is going to be honest?

if you want to be absolutly sure that your pet quality puppies are not going to be bred, you had better have them spay/neutered BEFORE leaving your property.

i sell 99% of mine with limited registration. many potential clients, when hearing this, find a pup from elsewhere...... unfortunately there seems to be an endless supply of breeders who don't care.

I've found that by keeping a close relationship with the owners of my puppies I can encourage training, titling, showing and getting hips and elbows certified, and with all of these I will convert a limited registration to full.

this isn't just an AKC issue, if one goes to german, slovak, czech or any other online classified listings. many puppies are sold without papers, or with sire and or dam without breeding papers.

please refrain to comment about the evils of early spay/neuter we all know.....

The only thing it will do is keep honest people honest. Those that would follow the contract anyways, or
truely were looking for a pet. It will not keep someone from breeding the dog without papers or registering
with another KC (if here in the US anyways)

If all breeders did this I think it would surely reduce the number puppies being produced from dogs that should not be bred, as well as reduce the number of unwanted GSDs in shelters. Nothing in life is perfect and surely there are those who will do what they want anyway, but I sure applaud any breeder who is willing to sell most of their puppies with limited registration, even if it means losing a buyer. Kudos to you Sitasmom for all you do to ensure the wellbeing of your puppies and ultimately for the betterment of the breed.

I really don't think breeders "own bloodlines" at all to tell the truth. I think it is something they would like to think is all theirs, but really how can it be?
