If you are looking at an obvious Long Coat (LC), and you hear someone say the dog is a long coat but not a stock coat, that means the dog does not have an undercoat, which is a disqualifying fault. A dog being LC with an undercoat is now accepted for showing, unlike in the past. If they call the obvious Long coat, simply Stock coat, they mean LST, or Long Stock Coat.

long coat has long hair and no undercoat
long stock coat has long hair and undercoat
stock coat has shot hair with undercoat
any german shepherd without an undercoat is disqualified from showing and shouldn't be used for breeding.
the advertisements are not always clear.

Also, many refer to the coated dogs, both those with undercoats and those without undercoats as "long coats". It is important to inquire as to whether or not the dog has an undercoat.
Another thing important to note is that with the stockcoated dogs there are varying coat lengths. Some of the stockcoated dogs can have very plushy coats, especially the German showline dogs. I hope this helps.
