Hi, I have a long coat with a super pedigree.  I bought a male thinking he was also long coat.  some replies here think he is plush coat.  YES it will be AT LEAST  a year and a half before I breed,  my female is just now one.  Judging these pictures, can you all tell me what  coat you THINK their puppies might have?  I really appreciate it!!

You will likely get a combination of plush, long coats and possibly standard coats. There are various factors that come into play, such as the genetics of parents and the truth is that you just never know- no guarantees. There have been breeders who have bred 2 standard coats and gotten a litter of long and plush coats because the long coat gene is a recessive gene that is in a fairly large number of GSDs. I bred horses years ago and it never ceased to amaze me as to what could come out of the parents. I did my research diligently and put a lot of thought into the breedings, but I still ended up with surprises, some good and some not so good. I no longer breed- it was a lot of work, time and money, plus I fell in love with every one of the horses and had a hard time parting with them, so I figured I wasn't cut out for breeding animals. My most recent GSD is a rescue. Gee, I sort of rambled, but I guess I hear of so many people who want to breed their dogs and it is not anything that shoudl be taken lightly. Both parents should be exceptional dogs in regards to pedigree, temperament, structure, health and working ability.  JMHO

If both parents are that "hairy" the pups will be coats.   The difference between LC and plush may be rendered null in 2010, anyway.  Who knows?

There is a DNA test available that will tell you whether or not your male is a longcoat. If it turns out he is not a long coat, he might still carry the LC recessive gene' To me it would be worth the $58 fee rather than spend the next 2 years trying to guess. It still wouldn't guarantee how the pups will turn out, but would give you a much better idea

I sent you the same DNA link as tirodegirl.  The issue can't be identified by eye sight.  I have a plush coat right now that just needs trimmed and he looks like a different dog.  I have a short hair that you could not tape a wig on her and make her look long haired.  Bottom line, it is in the genes.  Mom and Dad must both have the gene and even then they will only pass it on 1/2 the time.

Justice small hint - "just needs to be trimmed and he looks like a different dog" = longcoat NOT plush wh/does not exist in the GSD. Search the db for old posts where Louise Penery talks about trimming a longcoat.

How old is the pup in the picture?   My pup just looked fuzzy for the first 4 months, the only real telltale sign being  a few longer ear hairs, which I agree with the non LSC census on your pup, as the longer inner ear hair seems to be missing.

Just for comparison, here is my LSC at 3 months less a day, Just fuzzy, except for inner ear hair.

3 wks later, still not visibly a LSC except for her inner ears.

3.5 weeks after that (5.5 months) - definitley a geeky(ugly duckling stage), but also alot of ear hair (inside and out) all of a sudden!

and the final product (1 yr)...  alas, the swan emerges.  Quite a metamorphisis,

Sorry, DUH is me, major blonde moment. This is an old thread.  So, I guess, judging by willowsprings post, Bondo's mom already knows how the pups turned out?

Someone care to share?

I thought it was a new one too! lol
