I have read quite a few posts lately where this has been used and I truly hate to see it.
I feel that it is extremely derogatory and demeaning.
If you really do not believe what has been posted or said then say it, say just what you meeeeeen, don't beat around the bush.
If I am the only person that feels this way then so be it.
It may be that I am from a different generation??

I always thought it was used primarily to denote a thoughtful pause, someone thinking about/considering something or sometimes used to denote skepticism. I never thought of it as having a derogatory or demeaning implication.

I agree with Starrchar.....I only use Hmm.....to indicate I'm thinking about what has been said or what I want to say.
However, I suppose it could indicate a derogatory remark depending on the comment and remark.
Maybe people should write it out as Hmm...(thinking)....if they're trying not to appear negative.
That's a problem with written vs spoken words...there is so much more room for misinterpretation and misunderstanding.
