I would appreciate hearing successful and safe fly repellents that GSH breeders have used on their dogs AND pups. Here in Illinois the flies are out with a vengance, and those lovely upright ears are taking a hit! Suggestions, please? Thank you!
Flys Away can be purchased at a feed store. You can also mix citronella oil with vaseline. It's messy and you have to apply it 2,3 times a day, but it works.
Can this be used on pups at 6 weeks old?
I have heard great things from fly parasites. I was going to get them myself when I was having some serious fly problems from neighbors who would let their fruit rot. Here is a link. http://www.thebeneficialinsectco.com/fly-predators.htm When I researched this, it was pretty new so not alot of companies sold them but more companies carry them now. Neighbors moved, trees died and I dont have the problems that I did. I would do it though if I had the same problems.

SWAT. Get it from a feed store. Also fly strips, repelx, and maybe some RollOn.
I just decided to keep mine inside most of the day.
Swat works fine on adult dogs, but it tends to make ear tips heavy. I used it on Fox Terrier ears to help them fall. So on puppies, it will pull the ears down. The VERY BEST and MOST effective product I have discovered is BOI SPOT. Put several drops on the ear tips and flys, gnats and any other biting flies will not touch your dogs ears for up to a month ! I think only a drop on little puppy ears is all you need.
Too bad they don't make fly masks for dogs, like for the horses! They are a life saver, keeps the blackflies out of the horses ears.
I'd try roll on for younger dogs? It's made to go around horses eyes, so I'd think it should be a little more gentle I would think.
Swat is good too, although a bit goopy. Make sure you don't get the pink stuff :D
Any thing sticky, like roll on, vaseline, swat, will collect dust and dirt and cause ears to get heavy. The BIO- SPOT dries and so does not cause a problem. Plus it does not have to be applied but one a month. Citronella on ears of puppies will likely get in eyes and BURN.
I don't think roll on is sticky, if memory serves, but I haven't used it in a while.
But yes, SWAT is definitely messy. Not my favourite thing, but it does work fairly well.
Where did you get bio-spot? I've never heard of it
NEEM oil, and you can order Neem Protect which has neem and citronella, works against tics, fleas, mosquitoes and it can be sprayed in the eyes and ears and ingested without harm to small puppies or older dogs (don't actually feed it to them). It also has anti-yeast properties. AMAZON sells it.
