I'll be breeding my girl next year, and was considering using frozen semen. I've heard that it is more effective, but I've also heard from other people that the chances of her having pups are low and it is very expensive. What is yalls personal experiences with this?

Lifespan .........
fresh semen - 24 hours
chilled semen - 8 hours
frozen semen - 2 hours

with chilled a thru the cervix can be done, but you have to be spot on with ovulation
with frozen a surgical insemination is best and once again ovlation timing must be perfect. Semen must be placed where the eggs are - in the horns of the uterus.

Ive seen 6-8 puppy litters with frozen semen - you have to find a reproduction specialist that really knows what he/she's doing.

Thank you for taking your time to respond. Does the female have to go into surgery or can I do it myself?

After reread what you said I realized you already answered that LOL. So if the male is 14 hours away, by the time the semen gets to me it will be pointless?

by SitasMom on 24 May 2012 - 23:05

With chilled, she doesn't have to be put under general, but with frozen its required.

My suggestion is......
Do the ovulation timing, vaginal swab, brucellousis test, and plan on driving the 14 hours and staying 2 nights. It will cost the same as having him collected, shipping, and having the procedure. Make sure a vet is on call just in case she doesn't accept the male when she is ready for him.

Make sure the owner of the stud has also had brucellosis and bacteria count... just to be safe.

My vet who does AI's regularly has over 80% success rate with frozen semen ONLY if he does surgical AI with a time pinpointed by the progesterone testing. Fresh chilled - over 90% success rate with the same method.

He doesn't even try to do a vaginal AI with frozen semen. He says that sperm is not vital enough to make all that trip and chances for the bitch to get pregnant are very small. Fresh chilled with vaginal AI - 50/50.

It all also depends on the bitch. He's got one girl that will get pregnant just looking on a vial with the frozen... as he puts it... He does only vaginal on this one, but she is proven to always get pregnant this way.

I tried fresh chilled with vaginal AI and it didn't work even though the semen quality was excellent and we did all the progesterone pinpointing.... Next time I did surgical AI with fresh chilled and I ended up with 10 pups. However I HATE surgical AI. I think it is extremely invasive. I don't think I would do it again - just for the sake of my bitch... I would probably find a vet that does transcervical AI - a better alternative to the surgical with comparable success rate.

Some vets will do transcervical insemination with frozen--it's extremely fast and easy on the dog and apparently quite effective if the vet knows his stuff.

If I were to use frozen again, I'd seriously consider a dual sired litter.

Thawed frozen has a lifespan of about 12 hours. After a bitch ovulates, the eggs mature in 24 to 72  hours so the timing is crucial. Cervical implants are the only way to go if you're using frozen. When the progesterone level reaches 5, the bitch is ovulating so the implant needs to be perfectly timed. Even the best vets aren't always successful. I don't have any experience with chilled semen, but others I know have had more success using chilled than frozen.

A friend had a litter of 10 from frozen semen; that largest frozen semen litter I've heard of.

I wish the SV would approve the use of frozen/chilled semen.

Do other countries allow for frozen? For example, could I have frozen from the Czech Republic sent to the USA?

To the OP- I don't think I would ever invest that much in a maiden bitch. I would want to know if she can be bred, and what kind of mom she is before going to the time, trouble and expense of frozen.
If the bitch has a good history, I would certainly consider it. I would never use a "regular" vet though, only a repro specialist.
