My boy has gotten into the trash while I was away at work. My roommate said "he had a bit of fun with the coffee grounds", meaning he ate some. Is this the same as eating chocolate? Should I be concerned? If anybody can tell me anything Id much appreciate it. THANKS!

I just called my emergency vet who said ,if the dog ate it within 1/2 to 1 hour ago give 1 tablespoon H2O2 to make it vomit. They also said not to worry too much but get it out if you can.If the dog does not puke in 1/2 hour repeat that/ Also walk the dog around outside will help.
Sorry,H2O2 is peroxide

Coffee is a bad thing, and can cause the heart to race and the blood pressure to increase until there is a heart attack.
From Bob-O's emergency notes:
If you need to induce vomiting, first make sure that it is the appropriate to do so. Do not induce vomiting:
more than two hours after ingesting problematic substance.
when the substance is an acid, alkali, solvent, or petroleum product, as it will do as much damage on the way up as it did the way down.
when dog is comatose or very depressed.
To induce vomiting:
1 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide per 30lbs body weight; give once, repeat after ten minutes; don't administer more than three times; some dogs will drool and look miserable before vomiting.

How many kilo's is the dog? or pounds?
by gsdlvr2 on 24 October 2006 - 23:10
No, Bob-O ,I beg to differ, charcoal is not warranted here. Maybe if it ate a can full, but likely not for household grounds.I do agree,if it was my dog I would give the H2O2 10 min. apart and walk the dog. How much did he eat?

Reply I should add that is is very appropriate to administer a ground charcoal slurry that is available from your veterinarian. This helps to remove the toxins from the dog's digestive system.
You will need to take the dog to an emergency veterinarian to obtain this treatment. You should probably do this anyway.

Gsdlvr2, the reason that I mention the charcoal slurry is that the dog was eating from the garbage can? What else did it ingest? I doubt there were any aromatics or flammables, but there could be other things.
The charcoal will clean the dog's insides and do no harm. Been there, done that.

The bottom line is that only you can determine whether you need to take your dog to a vet or not. Essentially, many dogs get into the trash and many eat some coffee grounds. I am presuming these were the remnants from your coffee you drank today or yesterday?
Remember that the coffee grounds were boiled and most of the chemicals are leached out into your drink, and this includes the theobromine which is the only real issue here. The amount of theobromine in coffee varies, and in used coffee grounds would be expected to be very, very minimal.
Personally speaking, I would not be giving the dog anything and just watch him for now. Call your vet if there is a problem.
In any case, if you really feel this is an emergency, then you should not be depending on people posting here to give you accurate or appropriate advice.
Good luck. The dog will probably be just fine.

Bob-O true enough, the amount matters and also what else went in. I agree with this. If it is only a little bit coffee grounds+ charcoal will not hurt but may not be necessary. If my dog,I would balance the amount of what he ate with the help we try to give here. If he ate alot, have a vet dr. him. I should mention, everytime I need to get charcoal into someone it is no fun. They don't just say thanks this is yummy!. Depending on your skill level and the recommendations of your vet I would proceed with caution if giving charcoal, not bcos I think it is wrong but bcos you need to know how to get it in properly
When I do it I have to put a tube in the stomach from the mouth. I do not recommend you do this unless your vet says so and you have been trained
Bob-O it doesn't clean,it neutralizes ,no matter, just me and detail.
