Thank you, K-9. I wasn't sure. I have a 11 month old that I'd like tattooed.

It depends on the type of equipment. The ear punches that we use for pups have characters sized to grow.

I hate to suggest something that I have never tried, but others have and it must work, since I have heard no complaints.
There is a tattoo pen available with that one can write the number inside the ear of a grown dog. Is it as permanent as the pricked tattoo? I don't know. The dog can me mildly sedated for this, as it is supposed to be painless.
I have used the prick tattoos for puppies on dogs at the age of two (2) years, and the characters are quite readable, even at a distance.

Any idea where this equipment is available Bob-O ? It sounds well worth a try. Mine are also microchipped, so I could "trial" it on one of my adults or a puppy that is staying with me. Certainly sounds less traumatic. I suppose they "buy" the tattoo numbers from the person and then use it by pen? Im intrigued.

Mo, I wish that I did know for sure. I knew as soon as I opened my mouth that someone would take me to task. I have never used these pens because I use a normal dog tattooing kit.
I think the R.C. Steele company furnishes the electric pen and ink for tattooing, but I am not 100% sure. I would still have concerns about the permanency of the ink since there is little penetration of the skin and the final work depends on the skill of the operator. Perhaps these are best used to refresh an old tattoo, but beware the next statement.
I know that the S.V. gets tough if a dog's tattoo has faded and becomes tough to read. The LEFT ear then has to be tattooed, by the same tattooer, and notes in writing made to the S.V..
I stick with the tattoo kit that I use, since I certainly paid enough for it! I use it on young puppies and fortunately it is over in a few seconds because they sure scream. I have used the same tools for older dogs, but of course they were sedated when it was done. The kit costs a lot of money for a breeder, but when I bought it I did not have a tattooing service available to be at all.

Abe was almost 2-years when he was tattooed. The vet sedated him and we a breeder friend brought up his Haupter equipment to use. It came out fine and is very legible.
