i have 6 adult gsds. 3 weeks ago I noticed that 4 were losing weight. i took them to the vet and had complete lab work done. screened for worms, heartworms, coccidia, bacterial, viral, protazoan infections among many others with no answers. vet said it may just be weather related stress. they are eating fine and are healthy but still have not gained much weight. i am now free feeding these and feeding 2 cups thomas labs sports drink. any ideas to put weight back on?

Did you vet check your dog B12, TLI and folate levels?

by gsdfla on 21 October 2006 - 11:10

yes emma. also at vet suggestion, all dogs are on a diet of free fed wellness chicken and royal canin gsd mixed and honest kitchen raw food at night mixed with 1 cup thomas lab sport drink. the big problem is that in a few weeks we are going to montana. these dogs have spent entire lives in warm florida. temp change going to be hard with body fat and these dogs have none.

When I have a dog that's hard to put weight on, I use "Satin Finish" It's a stablized Rice Bran, You can buy it at any feed store, and it's typically used for horses, I buy the pelleted style and mix with a wet type feed, mix with kibble add some oil or something, whatever you do will be fine, mix 1/2 cup with your feedings 2x's per day. You will see a dramatic difference in a week. Good Luck.

what about testing for Giardia

by gsdfla on 23 October 2006 - 00:10

will try ratin finish. giardia test negativd. 1st thought i had was lepto or giardia or something similar cause the dogs just adore playing in the creek across from our house.
