If you are wise you will find a good breeder in the USA. Best to go visit the kennel and I would recommend you visit at least twice.
Many high quality breeders over here and being a novice your chances of getting a higher quality pup are slim as many dogs exported to the USA are the lower quality. I would recommend you look for at least six months before you purchase. If you look hard you will learn alot and have a much better chance of getting a good one.
Rule of thumb...never buy the first pup you look at and never make a decision while looking. Go home and consider several litters before you select.
Remember, you are picking a "friend" to live with you for the next 10-14 years! Hope this helps.

If you don't want a puppy bred in the US, ask DH on this board to help you.

Giggles, I presume that you live stateside. Therefore, I agree with DesertRangers and suggest to look stateside first because of the ease of visiting the kennel and interviewing people. But, ditto Blitzen on using the services of D.H. if the puppy is sourced from Germany.

I will add that Bob-0 and Blitzen are two that I would trust....
Never heard anything bad about gsdlvr either so sounds like you have good suggestions to look into.

Depending on what you are looking for but I have never heard anyone disappointed about their dogs from Marion and Karl Fuller, the Kirschental Kennel. Paperwork is always perfect etc. One Kennel that has really never had anything other than honorable mention.

What sunshine said. Marion and Karl Fueller provided me with great value, immediate responses to my questions, prompt delivery of paperwork, excellent overall efficiency, and...
...oh yeah, the pup! He's a nicely-structured, good-moving, deep-colored and healthy fellow with nice drives and rock-solid temperament.
