I started my 3 week old puppies on Purina One for large breed puppies.  This was per my vet's recommendations.  The ingredients are fair.  Based on all the recalls going on (once again; didn't we go through this a couple of years ago)....Maybe Purina One is the one to stick with.

What do you think?

Do you understand the voluntary recall?

Purina One switched their formula about 1-2 yrs ago and now contains Soy and Glycerine. For that price, you shouldn't be getting fillers.

BeeTree - I am not sure I understand you question...

Do I understand the word voluntary?  Yes
Purine One is not part of Diamond....

Please explain?

You said, "based on all the recalls", so I thought you didn't understand the current voluntary recalls. I don't think it has too much to do with your questioning your vet's feeding advice.

Ah...There has been a mis-understanding....

I am not really questioning my vet's advise.   Just looking to get different opinions on Purina One; taking into account the current recalls going on regarding the "better" dog foods (TOTW, etc).

Also, someone recommended to me a brand called "FROMM."  They are no listed on the recalls and the quality is good.  The problem I have is access to it.   No one sells it near me and the company does not sell it online.

I am looking for a dog food that I can get near me.  I was thrilled when the stores started offering TOTW.   Now I am not so sure.

I have looked at the other postings regarding this recall and there was no mention of Purina One.   I am just looking for some general breeder opinions.

Ships for FREE to your DOOR. Doesn't get more "close" than that. The prices on that site are also all comparable to that in pet stores, some even LESS than pet stores. I just ordered some kibble from there myself, ships to your DOOR in 3-4 business days, can't argue with that :)   I'd spend more than $4.99 (shipping price if purchase price is under $49) on gas alone in my big pickup to drive somewhere.

My point is, the reason you thought you liked TOTW hasn't changed due to the voluntary recall of some of their products. It is important to note that what attracted you to that brand, (internet experts?) still exists, and is now also creating your doubt. The recall really is a non-issue, avoiding the select mentioned bags solves all the worry.

And there will certainly be as many "better dog foods" as there are "better" breeders. IMHO

Purina One would not be a food choice for me, regardless of recalls, I would not feed Purina anything.

Now, I don't think it is the worst thing in the world for a breeder to start their puppies on.  I don't feed it myself and that is because I don't feed my dog anything with corn in it, he's prone to red allergy ears, if I do. But a good reason for starting on it is, the breeder makes it easy for the buyer during the transition.  It is affordable. And at this time, while going to his new home, the pup probably still has mom's immunities helping them out. It will be easy for a new buyer to feed the same food, it is found on every grocery store shelf.

Transitioning to something that is "better" would be pretty easy then, for everyone, should that be desired. And I do know of a breeder who does feed Purina, and isn't sorry about it, either.
